Mobile device buying guide

The following information provides general guidelines for buying a device based on the intended usage.

General usage features

Intended use Required feature
Hands free and general options recommended for all devices. Bluetooth, Speakerphone
No or low cost internet access for web browsing at Deakin and hotspots throughout the world. Can also be used to synchronize with your Deakin Exchange account. See below for details. Wi-Fi (WLAN, IEEE 802.11b/g, 802.11e, 802.11i standards)

Exchange specific features

Intended Use Required Feature
Windows Desktop synchronization with your Deakin Exchange account. Microsoft ActiveSync
Wireless, manual synchronization with your Deakin Exchange account. A data plan is required. See eduroam below for no cost option. Microsoft ActiveSync on the device
Wireless, real time synchronization with your Deakin Exchange account. This pushes updates to the device at regular intervals. An unlimited data plan is recommended. See DeakinSecure below for no cost option. Microsoft ActiveSync with Windows Push Mail (Direct Push) on the device
Access to eduroam wireless network for no cost synchronization with your Deakin Exchange account.

Note: Some devices do not fully support the protocols and may require software upgrades or special configurations.

Microsoft ActiveSync, Wi-Fi and the following:

Synchronization with a Mac. Apple iSync - Supported iSync Devices
