Resources for Student Rovers

What makes a great Student Rover?

  • A desire to help other students
  • Reliable self-management skills and ability to prioritise commitments
  • Realistic expectations of themselves - do not over commit
  • Good time management skills
  • An ability to communicate and show initiative
  • Proactive behaviours

Great Student Rovers are able to relate to fellow students in a respectful and friendly manner.

You do NOT have to be an expert on using IT or Library facilities - the Student Rover training helps prepare you for your role.

'My first year as a Student Rover has been a rewarding experience...

'There is never a dull moment working as a Rover and it is a great way to meet new people. I have made long lasting friendships with several fellow Rovers. I enjoy working as a Rover as it provides me with the opportunity to help new students settle in and orientate themselves to the rigours of University life.

'Training as a Rover at the beginning of the year opened my eyes to the vast resources that Deakin University ... offers... Being a Rover doesn’t just help other students with their studies, it also helps you with your studies too...

'...being a Rover means being able to adapt to new situations and solve individual problems and issues. The role of a [Student] Rover at Deakin University provided me with many new learning experiences and I enjoyed the challenges I was presented with. I would recommend this position to others.'

'During my time as a Student Rover, I’ve had all sorts of enquiries...

'Overall, the experience has been really fun and interesting. I’ve learnt a lot more about the support that the University provides. I’ve learnt a variety of IT skills that will be very beneficial in the future...

'My confidence in myself and communicating with other people increased greatly, because I practice my skills in talking to many students/visitors whom I’ve never met. I’ve also established new friendships with other Student Rovers from different countries and cultures.

'The staff have been very friendly and supportive of me. I would love to recommend ... to be a Student Rover. After all, what have you got to lose? :)'
