Publishing

All HDR candidates are encouraged to publish their work in refereed journals because this has a number of advantages:

  • it impresses examiners
  • you acquire valuable feedback from the referees
  • it builds your confidence
  • it gives you a track record which will be important for your employment prospects.

The following documents provide useful advice on the publication process:

Publications can form the basis of the chapters in your thesis and it is normal in such cases to list all the publications which emerged from the research project in the front of the thesis.

Another option to consider is whether you want to structure the thesis as a collection of publications. This is discussed in more detail at Theses based on a series of publishable works and in the Guide to Candidature (2 MB) (see page 39).

This is an interesting article by a candidate from another university who completed her PhD by publication: http://dspace-sub.anu.edu.au:8080/jspui/bitstream/10440/245/1/Robins_PhD2008.pdf

Networking

Professional networking is an essential tool as a budding academic or researcher. Workshops are provided to help you establish and improve your networking skills both in a face-to-face social context and in an online environment.

Online networking encompasses many internet-based tools. Social networking platforms such as Facebook, My Space, You Tube, LinkedIn, Twitter, blogs, message boards and Wikipedia can make it easier for people to listen, interact, engage and collaborate with each other.
