Choose your Dukes activities

You can choose activities you have always wanted to do; build on ones you already do or have tried before; or choose activities with a career focus. To achieve the Award you need to complete the minimum time period specified for each of these 5 Sections.

Physical Recreation (fitness)

Maintain good habits for a healthy, active lifestyle and improve your fitness by participating in physical recreation. Minimum period: 1 hour a week over 12 or 18 months**

  • Examples: basketball, cycling, dancing, martial arts, rock climbing, yoga...

Skill

Develop your personal interests and practical skills. Minimum period: 1 hour a week over 12 or 18 months**

  • Examples: car restoration, choreography, IT, knitting, languages, music, painting, public speaking...

Service (volunteering)

Contribute to and engage with your community. Develop your sense of community spirit and responsibility to others. Minimum period: 1 hour a week over 12 or 18 months**

  • Examples: teach English to refugees, community radio; care for animals; coach a sport team; mentoring or peer support...

Adventurous Journey

Develop lateral thinking, practical skills and encourage your spirit of adventure and discovery. Minimum period: 4 days and 3 nights (after appropriate preparation, training and a practice journey of the same length and focus.)

  • Examples: Great Victorian Bike Ride, cultural exploration of a new city...

Residential Project

Broaden your experience by undertaking a shared purposeful activity away from your place of residence. Minimum period: 5 days and 4 nights

  • Examples: Environmental project, residential language course, youth camp, leadership training...

 

**Please note: One of these sections (Physical Recreation, Service or Skill) must be for a minimum period of 18 months, unless you have previously been awarded a Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award.
