Graduate jobs

Every March, just as you are adjusting to being back at study, everyone seems to be talking about graduate jobs. Why think about graduate jobs when you have another trimester or two to complete? Here's an overview of what is going on.

Graduate programs

An organised recruitment drive by medium to large organisations and government departments.

A paid work, training and development period (1 or 2 years) that prepare you for higher level positions within that organisation.

  • Most applications close in March and April, for positions that start early in the next year.

Many graduate programs are advertised each year in Graduate Opportunities. A hard copy of this guide, is available at the Careers and Employment Centre on your campus in March.

Graduate positions

Entry level roles suitable for recent graduates with limited experience.

  • Positions are advertised as the need arises in an organisation.
  • Some employers will identify a role as 'graduate' because it has an entry level salary which they are not willing to negotiate. For example 'Graduate Accountant'.
  • Training and development is not always offered.

Specialist graduate programs

In certain fields most graduate recruitment is conducted through a centralised system.

For example:

Familiarise yourself with the system relevant to you and the dates for applications so you can prepare well in advance.

Get ready for graduate applications

Applications for graduate roles usually require more work than applying for your previous jobs.

  • Start to prepare in your second last year of study
  • Positions are competitive so try to achieve good academic results throughout your studies or demonstrate consistent effort and improvement
  • Organise work experiences and volunteer in your local community. Use the theory you are learning in the classroom, and build your resume.
  • Identify the employers and jobs you are interested in
  • Develop a strong base resume and start recording a variety of skill examples to simplify the process of tailoring applications to each employer
  • Attend Career Fairs, where you will have the opportunity to meet employers and ask questions
International students

Can I apply for graduate positions in Australia?

Check the eligibility requirements of each position. Make sure you have the appropriate visa or residency status. If an organisation is recruiting international students, a compulsory component of your application is an IELTS result. Get organised early, as booking in for IELTS test can be difficult.
