Why jobs are not advertised

An effective job search strategy will include strategies that endeavour to uncover jobs that aren't advertised.

“Employment experts in Australia, the U.S. and U.K. are regularly quoted as measuring the size of the hidden job market at between 65% and 90% of job appointments” Pauline Charleston - hidden job market expert

The hidden job market:

  • is a pool of vacant positions that are not advertised
  • can be uncovered using a variety of strategies

Reasons why organisations decide not to advertise:

  • save money
  • save time
  • minimise risk
  • not wanting a vacancy to be publically known
  • already have good candidate resumes in front of them, so no need to advertise
  • believe they may find a better candidate through referrals or a direct approach
  • policy
  • it’s too early to advertise

Good luck and remember to contact your nearest Careers and Employment office for assistance
