Professional associations
Professional associations and industry bodies represent their industries by raising their profile and gaining public awareness of the roles of the people they represent. They take different forms:
- some simply provide services to members for a fee
- others oversee professional certification of members' qualifications
Students are eligible to join most associations and take part in activities. In some fields, membership may be a legal requirement to be able to practice the profession. Membership may help you:
- meet people in the industry
- make contacts and show an employer that you are serious about your chosen career or area of study
- keep up with developments and new technologies within the industry
- update your skills and knowledge, thereby enhancing your career prospects.
Activities may include:
- conferences
- networking evenings
- workshops or advice about pay and conditions
- publishing newsletters or journals
