Work experience, volunteering and skill development

There are a range of ways to get experience while you study that will make you more employable.

Industry experience

In many occupations related work experience is necessary to getting a job. Examples include museum work, media, counselling, welfare and environmental work. Some courses provide opportunities for work-related experience in your field of study, but many students will need to seek out opportunities themselves. There are paid vacation work and internship programs, but in many cases volunteer work for related organisations can  provide essential experience.

Volunteering

Volunteering offers exposure to workplaces and work practices which develops transferrable skills such as teamwork and interpersonal skills. Along with your academic record, these skills are essential when employers recruit new graduates. Many employers are strongly interested in graduates' community involvements.

Skill development

You may identify specific skills which will be important to your career such as public speaking or event organisation. International award programs such as the Duke of Edinburgh's Award can structure your development of such skills, formally recognise your commitments and self discipline, with the added bonus of enjoying some truly memorable achievements.
