What was your first degree-relevant job and how long after you graduated did you secure this job? How easy/difficult was it to find work?
My studies at university were not directly relevant to my current job at the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF), but the generic skills I gained at university were. I was offered the job during my final exams. This was one of two job 'graduate program' job offers I recieved. This was out of around ten I would have applied for.
What skills from your course were most valuable in getting and undertaking your job? What were employers looking for?
DAFF were looking for all-round skills, such as teamwork, analytical skills, research and communication. These are all skills I have to use every day in my current position.
What advice would you offer current students in relation to graduate employment?
Spend quality time on your application, don't worry too much about your university marks, research the organisation you are applying for and speak to someone there about what they do and what you should expect as a graduate.
#1 tip for current students studying your course:
I went to some fantastic careers events put on by the Careers and Employment team at Deakin University.
