Qualified Ambulance Paramedic- Ambulance Victoria

When did you graduate?

2005 and 2009

Course you completed:

Bachelor of Nursing (pre-registration)
Bachelor of Health Science (pre-registration)

Organisation that you are currently working for:

Ambulance Victoria

How long have you been working for this organisation?

Since 2009.

Position title and short job description:

Graduate Ambulance Paramedic. Responsible for the provision of pre-hospital emergency medical care to patients and their families. We also provide transport to hospital when required as well as community education throughout our interaction with patients and families.

Working highlight so far:

Having a patient recognise and come up to me whilst I was shopping on a day off and thank me for attending to them a week earlier (oh, they also told me that we left some equipment at their house!).

What are the things you enjoy most about your job?

  • Seeing patients benefit from our care both at the scene and later on in hospital
  • Very different each day at work - one day can be busy, the next quiet!
  • We can literally end up anywhere caring for patients!

An area in which you have needed assistance:

Building confidence in my new position and becoming completely independent given the responsibility and autonomy in our role - there is a great deal of knowledge required to be a Qualified Ambulance Paramedic and this takes time 'on-road' to gain.

What do you intend to do in the future?

Continue working as a Paramedic and possibly furthering my skills to become a Clinical Instructor or MICA Paramedic.

#1 tip for current students studying your course:

Study hard but at the same time always ensure you make time for friends, hobbies and work. Most important thing of all - always have fun and enjoy Uni life - it goes before you know it!
