Ongoing learning at work

There are many opportunities for you to continue your learning at work. Decisions regarding your ongoing training may rest with your direct supervisor.

Employer facilitated training or development programs

Usually offered by the human resources department of large organisations, this may be initiated as a response to either:

  • your needs in developing as a professional, or
  • the needs of the organisation.

Depending on your position, you may be required to undertake certain training (for example, if your workplace begins using a new software package, or if you require Occupational Health and Safety training in order to begin your work).

Self initiated learning

You may wish to undertake training to develop into roles. It is useful to discuss these aspirations with your supervisor or human resources advisor to see if there is support for training in these areas. Some employers cover training costs, others may provide study leave.

  • Source information on existing courses to provide as an example.
  • Be prepared to negotiate as organisations usually only fund training that they perceive will benefit the organisation.
  • Work out how to present the benefits to the organisation, so that the supervisor can see the advantage in investing in your skills.

If your employer cannot support the training, you may want to consider options for undertaking training in your own time.
