Confidentiality, privacy and eligibility

Confidentiality

Counsellors follow strict guidelines for professional behaviour and confidentiality. Counsellors will not discuss information about you, including the fact that you have had an appointment, with other university staff, other medical professionals or members of your family without your permission. All records are kept in a secure manner and only used by the counsellor in undertaking their normal duties. Access to view a personal record can be gained by contacting the counsellor you have dealt with. Except under exceptional circumstance, the counsellor will maintain strict confidentiality.

A counsellor will breach confidentiality when someone discloses intent to harm him or herself or another. The counsellor will speak with the senior counsellor and appropriate follow-up will be made.

Privacy

The University manages personal information and health information in accordance with the Information Privacy Act 2000 (Vic.) and the Health Records Act 2001 (Vic.) Eligibility

Counselling services are free to students enrolled in a Deakin University Award course with a valid student number. The counselling service provides short term limited support. Where presenting issues may require long term therapy or support students will be referred to community based services.
