- About Deakin
ITSD's vision is to partner with all areas of the University to deliver quality, innovative Information and Communication Technology (ICT) solutions that enable Deakin to achieve teaching, learning and research excellence. In ITSD we uphold and reward the values of trust, respect, accountability, collaboration and excellence.
The role of the Information Technology Services Division (ITSD) is to provide core ICT services and support to the Deakin University community.
Internships in ITSD could be in any of the following teams:
- Administration services
- Operational services provision
- Service control group
- Service planning and development
Interns will be involved in a range of tasks/projects during their internship and are also allocated a dedicated supervisor who will assist and provide guidance through all aspects of the internship. Students are expected to be IT savvy or businesses minded; and have a strong interest in gaining industry experience to further their Deakin experience.
Nicole Bradley - Acting Benefits Realisation Manager
My name is Nicole Bradley, I am the acting Benefits Realisation Manager for ITSD. I began working at ITSD in 2005 after studying a Bachelor of Information Technology at Deakin. My first role was as a Business Analyst, which involved engaging with staff throughout the University to gather and document business requirements and working with ITSD developers to design technical solutions to meet these requirements. Following many opportunities for professional development and mentoring I progressed to the role of Project Manager. This role involved planning and managing various ICT projects.
My current role is within the Architecture and Planning Unit. In consultation with the University community, we are responsible for defining the strategic direction of the ICT environment at Deakin and planning the programme of work that will achieve this future state. My specific role involves embedding benefits management practices and assisting project sponsors to ensure successful realisation of benefits from ICT projects. This requires me to research best practices in benefits management, oversee the many ICT projects undertaken each year and facilitate various benefits planning and review workshops.
The aspects of working at ITSD that I value the most are the fantastic staff who work here and the many opportunities which exist to pursue challenges and undertake further learning.
Tim Hetherington - Assistant Project Manager
My name is Tim Hetherington and I manage small information technology projects within the Information Technology Services Division. This job involves putting together project teams of about three or four people (including business analysts, developers, database administrators and other specialised staff) who work together to achieve the goals of each project. The types of projects we run vary from providing server infrastructure for applications to run on, software development, application upgrades and even research and development projects. We are also encouraged to improve our processes and trial new methodologies and tools.
A facet of the job that I enjoy is the chance to work with emerging technologies. This is one of the most challenging, but yet rewarding components of working in ITSD. ITSD has also provided me with opportunities to collaborate and develop working relationships with many areas of the University. This keeps every project interesting and gives you a good exposure of the inner workings of the University. Working in ITSD is therefore not just about working with technology, but rather working with people to ensure the technology helps the University achieve its goals.
