Heather Carlisle – Strategic HR Development Intern, Trimester three 2009/2010
Heather was responsible for developing succession management strategies as a part of Deakin’s Strategic Workforce Planning Project. She also participated in a group project with fellow interns that examined methods for assisting in the promotion of the Internship Expansion project.
Heather described her experience within Deakin’s HRD as "an opportunity that allowed me to gain invaluable knowledge that I will be able to take with me throughout my career. I was made to feel like a respected member of the team and developed strong relationships with staff. I would strongly encourage anybody interested in pursuing this opportunity as I believe it is the greatest hands on experience for potential graduates."
Nada El-Khub - Occupational Health & Safety Intern, Trimester one 2009
Nada undertook her internship with the OHS group who are responsible for a variety of initiatives concerning staff welfare at Deakin University. Nada developed a proposal for a contractor management process at Deakin during her internship. She also participated in the selection process for the next trimester's intake of interns, including being actively involved in the interviews.
She described the opportunity as being a once in a lifetime chance to see the real world through the eyes of an undergraduate. Nada said that "the knowledge, skills, and experience gained by completing the DIS will definitely give me an advantage in the pursuit of future employment".
Angie Gibson – Risk Management and Commercial Management Intern, CFO group, Semester two 2008
Angie completed her internship across the risk management and commercial management portfolios in the then Financial and Business Services Division. She was responsible for capturing insurance renewal information and worked on a number of costing and business case evaluations.
Angie described her involvement as interesting and gave her an insight into the complexities the university faces with such matters.
Danielle Maycock - Strategic HR Development Intern, Semester two 2008
Danielle's main responsibility during her internship was to review Deakin's online induction program and identify possible enhancements. She did this by undertaking research into 'best practices’, benchmarking against other universities, and also distributing a survey to new Deakin staff, asking them how they found the online induction program. Danielle shared her findings in an oral presentation to the Strategic HR Development group, and also in a written format.
Danielle described the DIS as a "great practical experience that complemented my theoretical studies. An internship during my last semester gave me insight into working in a HR Division and has prepared me for entering the work force."
Danielle is now undertaking a graduate role at the Australian Bureau of Statistics in Canberra.
Dixit Jain – Risk Management Information Systems, CFO group, Summer Semester 2007/08
Dixit worked on various database development related tasks to improve the tracking of risk assessment processes for the University’s controlled and associated entities during his internship. Dixit also drafted a number of reports for various University committees.
He described his internship as giving him the chance to enhance his studies in finance and an understanding that risk management is not just financials. The flexibility in working around part-time work commitments was also highly valued.
