Indigenous Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarship (ICECS)

The objective of the Indigenous Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarship (ICECS) is to facilitate choice in higher education and to increase higher education participation for indigenous students.

Value

Cash payment of $2377 per annum in 2012 (indexed)

This scholarship is payable in two instalments - Trimester 1 and Trimester 2. No payment occurs in Trimester 3 for this scholarship.

Duration

Up to 4 years provided eligibility is maintained.

Number per year

The allocations for 2012 are not currently available.

Eligibility

To maintain eligibility, you must be:

  • an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander student enrolled in an undergraduate course of study in a Commonwealth supported place (CSP) with the Institute of Koorie Education
  • enrolled full time unless there are exceptional circumstances preventing full time study
  • not holding a bachelor degree or higher-level award unless such award is a prerequisite of their current undergraduate course of study
  • able to demonstrate you are in receipt of a means-tested Centrelink benefit or have a personal or family taxable income below the HECS repayment threshold, depending on independence status

Selection criteria

Selection, which is made by the Institute of Koorie Education at Deakin University is based on:

  • enrolled to study with the Instituate of Koorie Education
  • the degree of your involvement in your local Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander community
  • financial, educational or social disadvantage
  • responsibility for others
  • your disability status

Special conditions

After your first trimester of studies you may defer your ICECS entitlement for up to twelve months, but on resumption of your studies you must demonstrate that you have maintained their eligibility to receive the scholarship.

Sucessful applicants are not permitted to hold an ICECS and a Student Start-up scholarship (payable through Centrelink) concurrently.
