Starting university can be challenging and perhaps a little scary at times. There's no one who understands the situation better than your fellow students, who’ve been through it all before.
Peer Learning Programs (often referred to as Peer Mentor Programs) get you in touch with senior students who may be in their second or later year of study. These students provide peer support and will have undergone rigorous training and leadership development programs in order to link you into the university community. With firsthand knowledge and experience, they can provide practical advice and guidance on a range of things such as time management skills, effective study techniques, how to approach your course work, how to use the library to even where to go if you’re lost!
While many of the Peer Leaders may be taking the same courses as you, it's important to note that they can’t replace lecturers, tutors and Deakin staff. But they can certainly point you in the right direction.
The best thing about being mentored was…
"The best thing about being mentored was having another student to talk to about the aspects of university life I didn't know about and the services I was unaware of at the beginning of the year. I found that talking to a student first and asking all the silly questions helped me to focus on my studies and not to worry about the little things."
"You were able to get information and advice about services and University life from a student that has knowledge and experience"
