Students Helping Students Drop In (SHS DIS)

About the SHS DIS

SHS mentors can provide a wide range of personalised support in areas such as managing your time, achieving study-life balance, getting to know Deakin resources and services. Questions mentors typically answer include:

  • I am not sure about how to use Cloud Deakin, can you show me?
  • My tutorials are held on eLive, how do I log on?
  • I am having a few issues and need to move house? Which area can help with this?
  • How can I change my units and my major?
  • I want to meet more students and practice my conversational English? Are there places I can do this at Deakin?
  • I am doing very well in my units but I would like be involved in more activities? Can you suggest anything?

Mentors are familiar with Deakin's many services and will refer you as appropriate.

SHS mentors also answer questions about managing the expectations of writing at university, research and actually writing the assignments. Questions you might ask include:

  • I have so many assignments due all at once, I am not sure how to work out how long to spend on each one?
  • What is being asked in the assignment?
  • Where do I start? How to start researching my assignment?
  • Can you explain referencing?
  • How can I plan my essay?
  • How can I get my assignment to "flow"?
  • I am not sure what I have to do with my task, the question is not clear to me.
  • I have written the assignment but I am not sure if it makes sense. Can you read it?
  • I got a low mark and I want to understand how to improve for next trimester. Can you advise on that?

SHS mentors will refer you to a Language and Learning Adviser if necessary.

The services provided by mentors are free of charge.
