English language programs

WordPower

Do you want to improve your spoken and/or written English language skills?
WordPower is a new Deakin University program which supports students  to strengthen English language skills throughout study at Deakin.  It is open to students at any study level: UG, PG and HDR.

WordPower focuses on improving your English language skills for academic contexts so you can be more successful at:

  • working in groups
  • giving academic presentations
  • communicating on placements
  • asking lecturers and tutors questions
  • proofreading your own written work
  • participating in tutorials.

To achieve this, WordPower covers skills such as:

  • sentence structure
  • grammar
  • verb tenses
  • academic vocabulary
  • pronunciation

Classes will be collaborative and interactive and will include Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing activities. Word Power sessions are led by qualified TESOL (English) teachers and give you the opportunity to develop your skills week by week over the trimester, or the entire year, if you wish.

You can attend any session shown in the timetable. No need to register; just show up!

Com-PASS

Improve specific English communication skills needed for a particular academic unit.

Sessions may include:

  • discussions

Specific content will depend on the unit and the needs of the attending students.

Sessions are co-led by a PASS leader (a student who has successfully completed the unit) and a Communication leader (a current, successful MEd TESOL student).
