10.30 am-11.30 am: The research journey

This seminar discusses the program of research study; what is involved in being a Higher Degree Research student; what is supervision; and facilities and services that are available for students. The seminar will be followed by some perceptions from second and third year students.

11.30 am-12.30 pm: Student-supervisor interaction

In this seminar we discuss why research students need a supervisor and the way supervisors work. The seminar also provides strategies for establishing an effective interaction with your supervisor so you get the most  benefit.  Issues that are looked at include: arranging meetings with your supervisor; having a meeting agenda; the duties of a supervisor and the duties of a student.

12.30-1.00 pm: Lunch (bring your own or purchase from the cafe)

1.00-2.00 pm: Negotiating educational shifts

This seminar discusses the various types of education systems and their benefits. It also foregrounds critical analysis, what can be called plagiarism, shifts in education for you, and effective learning styles.

2.00-3.00 pm: Negotiating cross-cultural shifts

This seminar will introduce you to Student Life and the services offered. It also discusses the general transition issues students have to make in coming to a new country, cultural shifts and communicating effectively. Second year students will also be coming in to give strategies on how they managed.

10.30-11.30 am: What is referencing?

This session discusses reasons as to why we should reference our academic work; the major types of referencing; issues of plagiarism and techniques in sourcing material and how to use them.

11.30 am-12.30 pm: What is a literature review?

All HDR students are required to conduct a substantial review of literature to inform their research study. This seminar discusses the reasons for this requirement and discusses various strategies for incorporating this into your thesis.

12.30-1.00 pm: Lunch (bring your own or purchase from the cafe)

1.00-2.00 pm: Synthesising a literature review

This seminar draws attention to the reading that has been conducted by the student and the note making strategies used and how these can be synthesised into a literature review that evaluates, provides a critical analysis and informs the research study.

10.30-11.30 am: Reading academic literature

This seminar discusses the strategies in which reading academic literature can be an enjoyable, stimulating, smooth and productive process.

11.30 am-12.30 pm: Academic note making made easy

This seminar follows from reading strategies and discusses the techniques of making notes. In the process it draws upon techniques for quoting, paraphrasing and summarising, including techniques for avoiding plagiarism.

12.30-1.00 pm: Lunch (bring your own or purchase from cafe)

1.00-2.00 pm: The art of academic writing

This session reviews various forms of academic writing and the functions they perform in academic writing.
