Getting involved in campus life is an important step in adjusting to university life and will help you to make friends, gain valuable experiences and get the most out of your time at Deakin.
Below is a brief list of opportunities, services and facilities available on the Warrnambool Campus, however for more detailed information, make sure you check out your copy of the A-Z to Deakin (23 MB) and the Getting Involved site.
Clubs and societies: Joining a club or being part of a student community is a great way to get in touch with people with similar interests to your own. Check out the wide range of DUSA clubs and societies that you can join.
Sport and recreation: The Sherwood Fitness Club houses a range of cardio, free and pin weight equipment, boxing equipment, mats, balls, bands and ropes. The facility has a number of qualified fitness instructors who have extensive knowledge and competitive backgrounds in a range of sports.
Warrnambool Campus is home to the 9-hole Sherwood Golf Course which is within walking distance from the residences. There is a squash court which doubles as a group fitness/aerobics room. Two synthetic courts are located next to the oval and can be set up for netball, tennis or basketball.

Short courses: DUSA offers a wide variety of short courses to help you get that little bit extra out of uni, including barista (coffee making), RSA (Responsible Serving of Alcohol), dance and First Aid.

The campus has a Main Cafe, bistro and the Student Union Bar (SUB). The SUB has a bar area, dance floor with a stage and a decking area that overlooks the Hopkins River for relaxing summer days/nights.
Food and Shopping: A new centre just to the west of campus offers a range of fast food outlets and general shopping. A supermarket is located at Gateway Plaza, which is a 15-minute walk from the University. Buses also run regularly to Gateway Plaza and into the city centre.
Banks: The major banks and ATMs are located in the city centre. There is an ATM in the DUSA Bookshop on campus, and also at Gateway Plaza.
Medical Facilities: Hopkins Medical Centre has a clinic on the campus two sessions a week. You can make appointment through Student Life. There is a major hospital located in Warrnambool, South West Healthcare, which has accident and emergency facilities, as well as x-ray, physio etc. There are numerous private practices located around the town. Medicare is located in the city centre on Liebig Street.
Places of Worship: There are a variety of religious denominations with places of worship located around Warrnambool. Visit the Chaplaincy site for a full list.
Sport and Recreation: There are a number of fitness centres in Warrnambool as well as a gym on campus. Deakin has its own football, netball, under water hockey and rugby teams. Within the town there is also a variety of martial arts, soccer, track, swimming and biking groups.
Entertainment: Wednesday night is 'uni' night around town with two nightclubs and a variety of pubs. There is also a cinema and a ten-pin bowling centre.
Nestled in the heart of the rugged Great Ocean Road region and surrounded by a lush hinterland and rural landscapes, Warrnambool offers a amazing combination for visitors.
Warrnambool has spectacular stretches of coastline with fantastic beaches and sparkling water, beautiful parks and gardens, long stretches of seaside with walking and bike trails, visiting whales, notorious shipwrecks, unique volcanoes, great food and exhilarating sports, and a thriving city centre.
There are a number of events in the region, including the Port Fairy Folk Festival, the Warrnambool Show, May Races (horse racing carnival), film festivals in Port Fairy and other numerous festivals and carnivals around the district. Buses come to campus on regular bases from the city centre. From there you can catch buses down the coast or trains to Melbourne, Ballarat or Mt Gambier. Timetables and details are available online. The closest railway station is located in the city, but Deakin has a platform at which the train stops. Further details are available from VLine.
If you wish to take a taxi, remember that taxis can be expensive. If you are travelling long distances, you may wish to catch a taxi with a group of friends so you can split the cost. A taxi service is available by phoning 131 008 or catch one from a taxi rank.
