Settling into university

Making the move to university can be a challenging, and sometimes daunting, journey, but it's important to remember that you are not alone.

All new students face a range of emotions and issues when they move to a new environment like university; the key is how successful you are in adjusting quickly to these changes, and your ability to ask for help when you need it.

Finding a group of friends that you can talk, study and have fun at uni with, is really important, so don't be shy in reaching out to people. Smaller classes, like tutorials, are a good place to connect with students in your course.

The Deakin University Student Association (DUSA) also offers a variety of special interest, musical, sporting, political, discipline-based, religious and many more clubs and societies that you can join, to meet people with similar interests.

Deakin offers a range of support services to help you achieve academically, stay healthy and enjoy your time at university. A large number of these services are provided by the Division of Student Life, including:

  • Careers and Employment
  • Chaplaincy
  • Counselling and Personal Development
  • Deakin Card
  • Financial Assistance
  • International Student Support
  • Jobshop
  • Medical Centres
  • Sport and Recreation
  • Study Skills
  • Transition

DUSA also provides a range of support for all students, including academic advocacy if you're ever in need of some support.
