Insurance

The Insurance team provides specialist insurance advice to all organisational areas of the University.

Services offered through the Insurance area:

  • negotiate annual insurance cover for the University
  • provide advice to students regarding personal accident, student placement and travel insurance and provide assistance with claims
  • provide assistance to faculties and other areas to manage and settle insurance claims
  • maintain a watching brief on current insurance practices
  • preparation of committee reports on corporate insurance assessment and controls, and review of insurance policies.

The University has an extensive insurance portfolio covering a wide range of risks. On occasion, you may require a copy of a specific Certificate of Currency (i.e. written confirmation that Deakin University has in place a specific insurance policy). The most commonly required Certificates of Currency include:

  • Industrial Special Risk (otherwise known as property and theft insurance) – covering all real property of every kind and description owned by Deakin University, or for which Deakin University has accepted responsibility to insure prior to the loss.   • Personal Accident - covering accidental bodily injury to Council and Committee Members, volunteers and students whilst such people are engaged in activities of Deakin University. Certificate of Currency for Personal Accident (20 KB)
  • Professional Indemnity - covering acts, errors or omissions committed by staff and students of Deakin University in their professional duty. Certificate of Currency for Professional Indemnity (16 KB)
  • Professional Indemnity Medical Malpractice - covering civil liability for breach of medical professional duty in treatment of patients  by Deakin University staff and students. Certificate of Currency for Medical Indemnity (17 KB)
  • Public and Products Liability - covering Deakin University’s legal liability to pay compensation in respect of bodily injury and damage to property. Certificate of Currency for Public Liability (16 KB)
  • Public and Products (Hirers) Liability - covering legal liabilities of persons, groups or organisations not otherwise insured for personal injury or property damage arising out of the hire of Deakin University facilities.   • Public Liability (to Host Employers) - covering insured's legal liability to indemnify a host employer for increased Work Cover premium due as a result of a compensible injury to a student on practical placement. Certificate of Currency for Public Liability (to Host Employers) (16 KB)
  • Travel - Covering staff and students on authorised overseas business travel including associated holiday travel. Certificate of Currency for Travel Insurance (22 KB)
  • Workers' Compensation - covering compensation benefits and common law liability as defined under the Accident Compensation Act 1985 in relation to workplace illness or injury for employees of Deakin University. Certificate of Currency for Work Cover
