Deakin Studies Online (DSO) is a suite of technologies to facilitate learning online. Many units offered at Deakin University have a significant presence in DSO. If you are studying at Deakin it is imperative that you are able to gain access to DSO.
Students who use a corporate network, such as in a workplace, to access DSO have previously reported difficulties. Some of the symptoms experienced include:
Most corporate networks have in place restrictions regarding Internet access. These restrictions allow organisations to implement their own acceptable use policies, however in some cases this can restrict access to DSO.
If you access DSO from behind a corporate network, you will need to contact the IT Administrator in your organisation to organise appropriate access, in line with the policies of your organisation.
Technical information is provided below to assist the IT Administrator of your organisation in providing access to DSO in line with the policies of your organisation. The information is provided in the interests of assisting you to access DSO and is a guide only.
It is advised that all Deakin subdomains are opened for access, ie
*.deakin.edu.au
There are many hosts involved in the provision of Deakin Studies Online, therefore it is not feasible to provide a complete list. If for some reason all Deakin subdomains cannot be made accessible, the following are key subdomains which are used in the provision of DSO:
vista.deakin.edu.au
elive.deakin.edu.au
ilecture.deakin.edu.au
library.deakin.edu.au
Several components of DSO are Java based. Therefore, the system should allow Java executables. The version of Java that is required is 1.5 or higher.
Components of DSO also require external access to Turnitin anti-plagiarism software, which is hosted at:
*.turnitin.com
Access should also be enabled for this site.
Should you have further questions or difficulty using Deakin Studies Online, please contact the IT Service Desk.
