How to complete an Assessment quiz, survey or self test in Blackboard
Step-by-step guide for students
The Assessments tool allows you to participate in online quizzes, self tests and surveys. This guide takes you through how to access and complete a:
- Quiz - an online test for which you may receive a grade that is recorded for assessment
- Survey - an anonymous online test or questionnaire
- Self Test - an online test designed for revision, for which you may receive a score, but no grades are recorded.

- Click on Assessments in the Course Tools menu.

Note: If Assessments are not available in the Course Tools menu, navigate to the required quiz, survey or self test from your unit Home Page.
- Click on the name of the quiz, survey or self test you wish to do.

- Read the instructions for your assessment. Note the availability, duration, question delivery method, attempts allowed, and total grade.
- Click Begin Assessment.

- You will be presented with the quiz.

Complete a quiz or survey
Note: Question Status will show a tick under the question number to indicate that the answer to the question has been saved. It will also indicate if a question is unanswered or if the answer has not been saved.

If questions appear all at once:
- Click Save Answer after you complete each question (in case you lose your internet connection while doing the quiz).

- When you have completed all questions and saved all your answers, click Finish.

- A message will appear asking 'Are you sure you want to submit your assessment?'. Click OK.

- The message 'You have successfully submitted your quiz' together with the date will appear. Click OK.

If questions appear one at a time and you are allowed to revisit questions:
- Enter your answer and click Save and View Next.

- If you want to view the next question without saving the answer for the current question, click Next Question.

- If you want to change an answer, click the linked question number under Question Status.

- When you have completed all questions and saved all your answers, click Finish.

- A message will appear asking 'Are you sure you want to submit your assessment?'. Click OK.

- The message 'You have successfully submitted your quiz' together with the date will appear. Click OK.

If questions appear one at a time but you are not allowed to revisit questions:
- Enter your answer and click Save and View Next.

- When you have completed all questions and saved all your answers, click Finish.

- A message will appear asking 'Are you sure you want to submit your assessment?'. Click OK.

- The message 'You have successfully submitted your quiz' and the date will appear. Click OK.

Note: If you do not save an answer you will receive a warning letting you know that you cannot return to it later.
You must click Finish to submit your assessment. If you don't click Finish, your attempt will not be recorded.

To complete a self test
Note: Question Status will show a tick under the question number to indicate that the answer to the question has been saved. It will also indicate if a question is unanswered or if the answer has not been saved.

If questions appear all at once:
- Click Save Answer after you complete each question (in case you lose your internet connection while doing the quiz).

- When you have completed all questions and saved all your answers, click Finish.

- A message will appear asking 'Are you sure you want to submit your assessment?'. Click OK.

- Your total score and the correct answers for the self test will appear. Click Done.

If questions appear one at a time:
- Enter your answer and click Save and View Next.

- If you want to view the next question before answering the current one, click Next Question.

- If you want to change an answer, click the linked question number under Question Status.

- When you have completed all questions and saved all your answers, click Finish.

- A message will appear asking 'Are you sure you want to submit your assessment?'. Click OK

- Your total score and the correct answers for the self test will appear. Click Done.

Sometimes a self test will be set so that you can check your answers as you go. For each question:
- Enter your answer and click Check Answer.

- The question, your response and correct answer will appear. Click Next Question.
