Thank you for visiting the Deakin University Emergency Management web site for on-campus students. You will find some important information for your safety in the event of a threat or an emergency here. Please take a few moment to read this information carefully.

Your Personal Security

Your personal safely is very important to us.

There may occasions where you may be subject to threats. In these situations it is important to know what to do – at its simplest this means contacting Security on 222.

Deakin University tries, so far as practicable, to make its campuses safe and secure for all. All campuses are patrolled by security officers, 24 hours per day, seven days per week. On all campuses, Security may be reached by internal phone on 222. The new VOIP phones have this as a speed dial option. The full numbers are:

After-hours

If you are a student, there may be instances when you are working on your assignments in the computer labs or moving around the campus at night.

Security will provide escorts to car parks and public transport pick up points ON CAMPUS if they are contacted.

There are also a number of measures you can take to improve your personal safety and security at night:

• Before dark, move vehicles into parking bays closer to buildings: parking permits only apply Monday to Friday between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm.
• Whenever possible, do not walk unaccompanied.
• Always let Security know if you are studying in an area alone after hours.
• If you are using public transport, check the timetable to minimise the time you need to stand at public transport pick up points.
• Report promptly to Security anything suspicious or untoward.

Building Evacuations

Most buildings have two-tone emergency sirens.

• On hearing an alert signal (beep-beep sound): lock workstations, secure valuables, stand by and await instructions from a warden. If no wardens are present then evacuate via the nearest safe exit.
• On hearing the evacuation siren (whooping sound): evacuate in an orderly manner obeying any directions from wardens. Evacuate to the relevant assembly area as directed by wardens (wearing a red, yellow or white helmet). Do not leave the assembly area until you are instructed to by emergency services or a warden.

Note: Most automatic alarms will change from alert to evacuate automatically after 3 minutes.
Regardless of anything else, you must evacuate when the evacuation siren sounds

Some smaller buildings have a fire bell.

• On hearing the fire alarm bell: evacuate in an orderly manner obeying any directions from wardens. Evacuate to the assembly area. Do not leave the assembly area until you are instructed to by emergency services or a warden.

If there is a fire

• As soon as you find or suspect a fire, close doors to confine the spread of smoke and fire .
• Warn other occupants on the floor or in the building.
• Operate a fire alarm if the building has manual fire alarms.
• Phone Security on 222 or if not available 000.
• If the Emergency Control Organisation has not taken control of the situation, evacuate the building.
• If evacuating, go to the nearest stairway or exit. Close the door behind you. Do NOT use an elevator.
• If the nearest exit is blocked by heat, fire or smoke, stay low and go to another exit.
• Assemble in area away from the building. Do not re-enter the building until permitted so by emergency personnel. Do not leave the area until you are instructed to by emergency services or a warden.

If you find a fire there is always the temptation to fight it personally. However your first priority must be to confine the fire, raise the alarm and safely evacuate the building. Do not fight the fire unless you have had specific recent training in the use of extinguishers and have backup present.
