CADET emphasises the importance of design, rapid prototyping and modelling in engineering practice.
Settings that support Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and Project-Orientated Design-Based Learning (PODBL) are central to the education rationale of CADET. The focus is on skill acquisition and application, in parallel with theoretical and scientific underpinnings.
Interaction with industry is also an important and prominent feature of the CADET learning experience. Students learn from a selection of industry-based projects and longer-term research activities.
Industry collaboration includes guest lectures, work-integrated learning opportunities and input into the curriculum. This ensures our students acquire the relevant knowledge, skills and competencies that are highly sought after by their future employers.

This is an interactive, virtual reality 360 degree fly-through video of the CADET building.
Students will benefit from CADET by their access to the latest technology – so basically, if they can think it, then we can build it. It’s as simple as that. Whatever’s in their imagination can be created with the guidance of technicians who are experts in their field, to help students realise their dreams.

CADET’s focus is on digital manufacturing, rapid prototyping, 3D modelling and visualisation technologies.
Its purpose-built, interactive laboratory and workshop learning spaces enable students to project the creativity, imagination and research required to solve modern engineering issues.
Virtual Reality (VR) Lab
CADET's Virtual Reality (VR) Lab is the first of its kind in the world. This is due to facilitating a cave automatic virtual environment (CAVE), a computer-aided design (CAD) wall and a large-scale haptic device in the one facility. This means a participant is able to walk around; through and even touch virtual objects in a virtual world, and imagine products that are yet to be realised.
Facilities at CADET
CADET features over $8 million worth of teaching equipment. The cutting-edge technologies, specialist aids and high-end equipment enable students and researchers to be creative and come up with innovative solutions.
3D printing lab
CADET houses one of the two largest 3D printing labs in the southern hemisphere. The 3D printers available include Makerbots through to large-scale Stratasys. Students can print with materials such as plastic, silicon and titanium.
Materials science corrosion and polymer lab
A state-of-the-art laboratory that provides all the necessary equipment to analyse, process, research and find new ways in creating various materials in order to discover new innovative products for future use.
High voltage lab
The high voltage lab is a key facility within CADET that dazzles visitors with tangible lightning bolts. It enables students and industry to utilise the number of Tesla transformers within the lab to test electrical related experiments. The system is capable of reaching voltages up to 500kV.
Design and realisation studios
CADET's design and realisation studios with advanced rapid prototyping equipment help to facilitate students, who can develop an idea from their mind all the way through to a tangible product.
Deakin AusNet Services electrical engineering lab
Featuring world-class equipment, including a Terco power system simulator (PST) and various LabVolt power system apparatus, this facility allows students to model and emulate various industry standard power systems and electrical scenarios under a safe laboratory environment.
