Approximately 85 staff and students came together on the Burwood Campus (Elgar Rd precinct) to celebrate Harmony Day (21 March) and Cultural Diversity Week (19-27 March). Hosted by the Faculty of Business and Law and the Equity and Diversity Unit, the event provided an opportunity for staff and students to share aspects of their culture, faith and language and to celebrate the benefits diversity brings to Deakin University.
The event was opened by the Rhythm of Life (African Drumming ensemble), followed by a Welcome to Country by Uncle Colin Hunter. Roman Ruzbacky, Equity and Diversity Unit, gave an opening address and a key note speech was delivered by Susan Carland, founder and presenter on SBS’s critically acclaimed Salam Cafe. Participants were also able to sample foods from a variety of countries.
