Field work and practicums

The Disability Standards for Education require universities to implement measures to ensure that students with disability may participate in learning experiences on the same basis as students without disability - this extends to study activities off campus such as field trips, practicums and work placements, and we have a responsibility to make these activities as inclusive as possible.

The Disability Resource Centre (DRC) encourages students to think about the impact of disability in relation to field trips and work placements as early as possible, and to be proactive in discussing any possible issues with staff where adjustments might need to be made.

Helping students plan for off-campus activities
  • Make students aware of off-campus activities as early as possible, so students with disability can plan ahead if they need to arrange for an academic support worker or assistive technology.
  • Make expectations about off-campus activities clear.
  • Encourage and provide opportunities for students to discuss any concerns they may have.
  • Consider any accessibility issues at off-campus locations and make students aware of any possible issues.
Practicums for students with disability
  • Make sure assessment criteria and expectations are clear in relation to placements.
  • In some circumstances a student may choose not to disclose their disability to the provider. Be aware of a student's privacy in relation to the information you give to a placement provider. Contact the DRC for advice.
  • Where you are aware of a student's disability-related needs, consult with them in finding an appropriate placement and work with them to consider any necessary adjustments (eg altered work hours, assistive technology, issues with physical access).
  • Establish clearly with placement providers who is responsible for providing any adjustments.
  • Make sure someone is responsible for keeping in touch with the student and provider so any difficulties can be resolved quickly.
