Josephine's story

In 2001 I graduated from Deakin University with my Bachelor of Arts with a double major in Sociology and Communication. My qualification took almost 10 years to complete. The high standard of my achievements at Deakin opened many avenues of employment in the human services sector - a field in which I knew I could really make a positive difference for people at vulnerable times of their lives.

My studies enhanced my employment opportunities in social welfare, health and disability. I worked in various capacities including management, counselling and support and advocacy roles while studying part time and as a distance education student. The completion of my BA enabled a career change that is still current today. Another goal was realised when I commenced work in the private school sector as a school counsellor.

At times I had to defer due to a number of difficult times of my own life journey. At times I was ready to give up but my defiant ambition, determination, dedication and my strong desire to achieve my goal brought my dream to fruition. Without the encouragement, support and endless positive energy of the Disability Resource Centre (DRC) staff I could not have achieved my personal and professional goals.

Oh, yes, I quite forget that I have a vision impairment.

In 2010, I will commence a Master of Social Work. Again, I will achieve my goals. I am very excited by all the new assistive technology that I have discovered through the wonderful staff in the DRC and I am looking forward with sincere thanks to their support and advice.

I just want to add that it was such a joy to hear the familiar voice of Deakin personnel with whom I had previously connected. I look forward with such enthusiasm to the future.
