- Who processes my claim?
All Workers' Compensation claims are handled by HRSD - contact your Campus OHS officer.
All Motor Vehicle Insurance claims are handled and processed by the Fleet Management Officer ext.71349
All other Insurance claims are handled and processed by the University Insurance and Risk Officer - contact Anita Armour ext.72230, anita.armour@deakin.edu.au.

- What are the insurance claim deductibles or excesses?
Our excess levels vary from policy to policy and are charged back to the relevant Faculty or Division.
- Directors and Officers Liability - $5,000
- Crime - $20,000
- Goods in Transit - ranging between $500 and $5,000 depending on goods
- Industrial Special Risk - $10,000
- Marine Hull/Craft - $200
- Motor Vehicles - $500 except drivers not fully licensed- $800
- Overseas Travel - $NIL
- Personal Accident excess for students - $50
- Professional Indemnity - $10,000
- Public and Products Liability - $2,500

- I've been asked to provide a Certificate of Currency. What is it and where do I get one?
Certificate of Currency is a written description that is issued by the insurer that confirms the Deakin
University insurance policy is current and valid as of the date and time of the certificate. To obtain a

- Will Deakin University add interested parties to its Public Liability Insurance Policy?
No, except in exceptional circumstances. Contact the Manager, Strategy and Risk on ext.68112.

- What coverage can Deakin University provide to small groups using Deakin University facilities?

- What do I need to know about Motor Vehicle Insurance?
In the event of an accident, if anyone is injured, notify the police immediately and if necessary call an ambulance.
Provide the following details only to the other party or parties involved:
- Your name and address
- Name of vehicle owner - 'Deakin University'
- Registration number of the Deakin University vehicle
Obtain from the other party/parties involved:
- Drivers' name and address
- Drivers' licence number
- Registration number and vehicle make and model
- Owner's name (if not the driver)
- Insurance company details
- Extent of damage to other vehicle(s)
Record the names and addresses of as many witnesses as possible.
Do not be drawn into discussions of any kind, regarding the negligence or liability of any person and do not make any admissions of negligence or liability.
If Vehicle is drivable:
- Record necessary information, as outlined above.
- Phone Deakin University Accident Report Line - (03) 5227 1349 and provide details of accident.
If Vehicle is not drivable:
- Record necessary information, as outlined above.
- Phone accident allocation centre on 131176 to arrange a tow truck / roadside assistance.
- Request tow truck driver remove vehicle from accident scene and store securely until further instructions are provided by Deakin University.
- Phone Deakin University Accident Report Line - (03) 5227 1349 and provide details of accident.
An accident should also be reported when there is only damage to the other/third
party vehicle.
Mobile phones and staff members' personal property, stolen from University vehicles, is not insured by the
University. Damage to private vehicles, parked in University parking areas, is not insured by the
University. 'Owners' Onus Applies' (at owners' risk) signs are displayed on all University campuses.

- Am I covered if I am injured in a transport accident on my way to or home from Deakin University?
Yes. You can make a claim whether you are a staff member or student through the Transport Accident
Commission (TAC). Look up 'work related compensation' on their website www.tac.vic.gov.au.
Please note that there is a medical excess under certain circumstances with the TAC. Look up 'medical excess' on their website www.tac.vic.gov.au.

- What do I need to know about Personal Accidents on University Campus?
All personal accidents must be reported without delay to the University OHS Manager. If you are a staff
member you should contact your campus OHS officer in relation to lodging a Workers' Compensation Claim.
If you are a student, you should contact the Insurance and Risk Office on ext.72230 in relation to lodging a claim.

- Are Deakin University students covered by insurance when on practical placement, excursions etc.?
Yes. Cover is available for Deakin University students whilst on Practical Placement, Work Experience,
Field Trips, Street Performances, Excursions, Off Campus Field Assignment and Practical Training. For more

- What do I need to know about Property Insurance (ie Industrial Special Risk)?
Employees' and students' personal property lost, stolen or damaged on University premises is covered BUT an excess
of $10,000 is payable. Clothing of staff members damaged during working hours is not covered, you should
refer to the HRSD policy 'Compensation for damage to clothing - procedure'. On becoming aware of a theft,
willful or storm damage of/to University property, you must contact the local Police station, Deakin
Security on ext.222 and/or complete the Insurance Report.

- What do I need to know about Overseas Travel Insurance?
Deakin University has an extensive overseas travel insurance program, available to staff for work related

- Is there an excess when making a travel insurance claim?
No. There is no excess for a travel insurance claim.

- I'm a Deakin University staff member and my overseas travel combines work and leisure activities. Do I need to do anything to make sure I'm covered by the Travel Insurance Policy?
Yes. If your leisure component is more than 50% of the total trip duration to a maximum of 20 days, you will need to seek additional insurance from another insurer. Please note this is not available through Deakin University.

- I'm a Deakin University staff member. Are my partner and/or dependent children covered under the University's Travel Insurance policy or should I arrange alternative cover?
Insurance cover is provided to include one immediate family member [i.e. parent, step-parent, sibling] OR partner and dependant children as long as the itineraries
and locations match the staff member.

- I need to make a claim under the Travel Insurance Policy. What do I do?
In an emergency contact the emergency contact number provided to you. In all
other circumstances you will need to complete a Travel Insurance Claim Form

- There has been some unrest in the country I am travelling to. What do I need to do regarding travel?
Refer to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) website www.smartraveller.gov.au
You should monitor the website prior to your travel and be prepared to delay travel plans according to the
advice. Staff and students must not travel to locations listed as 'Do Not Travel' whilst undertaking work
or study related activities.

- I am going on an Outside Studies Program (OSP). Am I covered by the University's Travel Insurance policy?
Yes, however if your travel exceeds 180 days you will need to contact the Insurance and Risk Officer, Anita Armour on ext.72230 or email anita.armour@deakin.edu.au.

- I have a pre-existing medical condition for which I am currently/recently being treated by my doctor/specialist. Do I have to declare this condition to the insurance company? How will I know if I am covered?
The Deakin Travel Insurance Policy generally will provide cover for pre-existing medical conditions except in the following circumstances:
- Expenses incurred when travelling against medical advice, or travelling to seek medical attention or advice;
- Expenses incurred in relation to a terminal condition diagnosed prior to travel or when the person is unfit to travel;
- Expenses incurred for continuing treatment, including any medication commenced prior to travel.
If the staff member [or accompanying traveller] have a pre-existing medical condition, or are over the age of 75, an "Application for pre-existing medical conditions or mature travellers cover form" available from the Risk and Insurance Office must be completed. Failure to complete the form will result in the staff member [or accompanying traveller] being uninsured.
