Deakin University and The Smith Family share a commitment to assisting disadvantaged students achieve their educational goals. As you read the information about the fantastic work being undertaken by The Smith Family we’re sure you will agree that this is a very worthwhile cause.
The Smith Family works to unlock opportunities for financially disadvantaged children and their families. The Learning for Life program, where proceeds from our charity auction will be donated, provides sponsorship (both financial and through personal support) of individuals to assist them successfully undertake their studies.
The Smith Family’s Learning for Life program makes a long term difference in the lives of disadvantaged Australians and enables them to reach their full potential. By providing direct financial assistance for the essentials such as text books, school equipment and uniforms, a Learning for Life sponsorship means a child can get the most out of their education.
Learning for Life focuses on literacy, comprehension (reading), financial (understanding the value of money and how to use it) and Technology (enables families to have access to technology and skills to use it). The Smith Family has a commitment to indigenous and the early years. Many of the children The Smith Family has supported are now becoming the first of their families to graduate from University or complete a trade.
Deakin University has been proud to support The Smith Family's Learning for Life program, contributing towards the cost of providing educational support to disadvantaged youth.
This year, Deakin University raised $11,000 towards scholarships that will directly benefit up to 27 students taking part in The Smith Family's Learning for Life program.

Members of the 2007 Team-building Day Committee were delighted to present a cheque to the Smith Family for $11,000 from the proceeds of the charity Auction held in August 2007. The presentation was made to Belinda Griffiths -Events & Sponsorship Manager and Leigh Bartlett -Partnership Manager of the Smith Family. Attending the presentation was from left, Paul Farley - Interim Director of Division and members of the 2007 Team-building Day Committee: Ashleah Davis, Susan Morris, Katie Napier and David Morrissey.
The scholarships will be made available to primary school students whose families are struggling to cover some of the basic costs of education such as excursions, text books and uniforms.
With Deakin's support, these children will be able to participate in the same learning and development opportunities as their peers, allowing them to reach their full potential.
