The Science Building was built in the early 1970's. The original building had three stories and a floor area of 9,000m2. In the late 1980s a further 4,500m2 was added in the form of two basement fitouts and a rooftop extension. A further 2,500m2 was added in the early 1990s with the construction of a three story extension to the north-west.

The scope of the project included:

• The provision of a laboratory tower to house research and teaching laboratories and laboratory support spaces at Levels 2, 3 and 4 of the south-west wing of Building ka (Science Building).
• Alterations provided additional general purpose teaching spaces at Levels 3, 4 and 5 of the north-west wing (Science West) and central corridor area of Level 3.
• Alterations to areas of 5 Level in the south-west and east wing.
• Provision of a new facade to the Building.

Building ka (Science Building) currently houses teaching and research laboratories and associated support areas, tutorial rooms, lecture theatres, offices, and staff and student amenities.

The main occupants of the building are:

• Faculty of Science and Technology

  • School of Engineering and Information Technology
