Deakin University’s aim is to be recognised as Australia’s most progressive university. We are proud of our Geelong heritage and hope to make Deakin’s Geelong Waterfront Campus one of Australia’s most modern, picturesque, ecologically sustainable and technologically advanced campuses. In doing so, Deakin University intends to be a major strategic partner in the future of this important regional city. This campus will continue to be the home to the University Chancellory and the recognised front door to the University.
Deakin has a responsibility to its students and staff - present and future - to provide them with appropriate teaching, research and related facilities. It is in the interests of both Geelong and Deakin that our facilities are integrated with our surroundings, immersing the campus within the life of the city.
Deakin University has prepared an exciting Masterplan for the campus. This plan provides the framework within which any future development of the Geelong Waterfront Campus will take place. I hope that you will share my enthusiasm for the Masterplan.
With best wishes,
Professor Sally Walker
Vice-Chancellor
The Masterplan optimises the waterfront location and sets up an integrated network with the fabric of the surrounding city. It includes active pedestrian connections linking the waterfront through the campus to public transport nodes, city cultural facilities and the central activity area. The Building forms and the network of open courtyards within the campus respond to the existing urban forms and set a precedent for future surrounding development.
The Masterplan also adopts a ‘campus heart’ approach, locating the focal activity hub and open spaces at the centre of the campus, and revealing the life within the University. Key teaching and student spaces sit adjacent to the heart, with ancillary services located at the campus periphery.
This Masterplan will not be a static document. It will have yearly reviews, three-yearly updates and be the subject of a major review after 10 years. It acts as a design framework for the University itself and a guide for its architects and other project consultants.
