Masterplanning

Melbourne Campus at Burwood Masterplan

Message from the Vice-Chancellor

Deakin University’s aim is to be recognised as Australia’s most progressive university. We hope to make Deakin’s Melbourne Campus at Burwood one of Australia’s most modern, picturesque, ecologically sustainable and technologically advanced campuses. At the same time, Deakin wishes to be seen as a responsible member of the Whitehorse community and a good neighbour.

Deakin has a responsibility to its students and staff - present and future - to provide them with appropriate teaching, research and related facilities. It is in the interests of both the local community and Deakin that our facilities are in harmony with our surroundings.

Deakin University has prepared a Masterplan for the campus. This plan provides the framework within which any future development of the Burwood Campus will take place in the life-time of the Masterplan. I hope that you will share my enthusiasm for the Masterplan.

With best wishes,

Professor Sally Walker
Vice-Chancellor

What is special about this Masterplan?

The Masterplan includes the widespread use of open spaces, many of them acting as “fingers” moving out from the protected areas.

The Masterplan also adopts a “spine” approach, with a central corridor of development through the centre of the campus, with nodes of development running off the spine. This will allow people using the buildings to focus on the corridor, while leaving more tranquil areas away from the spine for students, staff and visitors.

This Masterplan will not be a static document. It will have yearly reviews, three-yearly updates and be the subject of a major review after 10 years. It acts as a design framework for the University itself and a guide for its architects and other project consultants.

Design principles

1. Park-like 2. Urban
Park-like
Gardiner’s Creek forms the basis ‘fingers’ of parkland to permeate the environment of the campus.
Urban
The Masterplan creates a new campus design, combining open space and appropriate urban development.

3. Legibility 4. Relevant
Legibility
Provides basis for a logical progression through the campus and sequential spatial experience, assisting visitors, neighbours, students and staff.
Relevant
Modern education requires flexible teaching spaces, including easy links with external collaboration partners.

5. Network of nodes 6. Active spine
Network of nodes
Create a network of diverse spaces within the campus. This will create distinctive experiences for users.
Active spine
Encourage activation and extension of existing central pedestrian spine and connection of the Burwood Highway side of the campus with the Elgar Road side.
