Parking and Traffic on Campus

General Information

Road Safety Act

Deakin University roads and car parks are governed by the Road Safety Act (1986), as are all Victorian roads, and by Regulation 14.1 − Control of Traffic and Parking. You must obey all road rules, including speed limits and parking restrictions.

You must park your vehicle in a defined car parking bay, within an officially designated parking area. Signs posted at the entrance to each car park define who may park there.

Parking Infringements

Parking Infringement Notices may be issued for any vehicles parked illegally, including vehicles parked outside marked bays. For more information please see Parking Infringements.

Parking Permits

Deakin University has seven parking permit zones identified by signs and coloured line markings on the road surface. Some permit zones operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Please read the signs and look at the lines to avoid fines.

All vehicles parking at Deakin between 8.30am and 4.30pm Monday to Friday require a current parking permit, with the exception of motorcycles, scooters and bicycles, and vehicles parked in a limited number of free parking spaces at the Geelong Campus at Waurn Ponds or the Warrnambool Campus.

Permits should be placed on the left hand side of the windscreen. They must be visible at all times and not obscured by window tinting, sunshades or sun visors.

For further information please see General Information.

Availability of Parking

All parking permits (except reserved bay permits) allow the holder to park in a vacant bay in the zone(s) covered by the permit. A permit does not guarantee that a bay will be available. Parking is strictly on a first-in, first-parked basis. At some times (such as at the start of trimester or during examination periods) the traffic may be congested and parking may be difficult.

Traffic is often particularly congested at the Melbourne Campus at Burwood on the hour on week days, when classes change. If possible, you should plan to arrive or depart at other times. Zone 4 bays are in high demand on the Burwood Highway section of the Campus, but Zone 4 and Zone 5 parking is also available in the Elgar Road car parks.

There are limited numbers of Zone 5 (Red) and Zone 4 (Blue) bays available at the Geelong Waterfront Campus. Parking is very congested on week days after 8:00am and alternative forms of transport are recommended, especially if you are arriving at the Campus after 8:00am.

The above issues should be considered before you purchase a parking permit.

There are a limited number of free car parks at the Geelong Campus at Waurn Ponds and the Warrnambool Campus, but they do not have sealed surfaces or lighting.

For other options, please see General Information or (for Burwood) Deakin University′s TravelSmart web page.

Parking Fees and Charges

A complete list of parking fees and charges, and information about where to obtain and how to pay for parking permits, can be found in Fees and Charges.

Full-time and part-time staff can purchase Triple Trimester or Trimester permits by salary sacrifice.

Deakin University does not issue refunds if you discontinue your studies or employment.

Permits are issued free of charge to members of Council and for University vehicles held in central pools for staff use.

Reserved Parking

There are some Zone 6 (Orange) reserved bays at the Melbourne Campus at Burwood and the Geelong Waterfront Campus. A Zone 6 parking permit reserves a bay at your home Campus for you to use 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, subject to certain exceptions and conditions. The permit also allows you to park in Zone 5 or Zone 4 on another Campus, but does not guarantee that a bay will be available there.

For information about reserved parking please see Reserved Parking.

Disabled/Accessible Parking

Public free time-limited disabled parking bays are located close to buildings. A vehicle must display a Category 1 Disabled Persons Parking Permit issued by a local council to park in these bays. For further information see VicRoads - Victoria Disabled Persons Parking.

A vehicle must also display a valid Deakin University parking permit to park in a Disabled bay in a permit zone.

For further information please see Disabled/Accessible Parking.

Resident Parking

Some parking areas can only be used by students who live on campus and who have a valid resident′s permit. For further information please see Resident Parking.

Car Park Safety and Security

For information about car park safety and security please see Safety and Security.

Visitors

Faculties and Divisions are issued with a limited number of daily permits free of charge for 'official visitors' at the start of each year. Once this supply is exhausted, additional permits must be purchased from FMSD at the day permit rate.

Casual day visitors must purchase daily parking permits from the ticket machines in car parks or near Campus entrances.

For further information please see General Information

Events

You must obtain permission to use Deakin roads or car parks for a racing or training event. For further information, please see Events Using Roads and Carparks.

Various arrangements can be made for special events held at Deakin University Campuses. These include prepayment of parking permits for event participants, designated parking areas, and managed VIP parking. Event organisers should contact the Parking and Traffic Co-ordinator well in advance of the event to determine the most suitable options.

In special circumstances, the Chief Operating Officer may designate certain areas for free or restricted parking.

For more information please see Parking for Organised Events and the Event and Visit Management Manual
