Project Management

View of Building C at Melbourne campus at BurwoodA team of project managers, architects and consultants contributes to the project management of large and small projects undertaken in the university. Project management services are provided for new works of all sizes, from the delivery and installation of new pinup boards, or minor office alterations, to management of the design and construction of major new multimillion dollar facilities.

Services are available for every stage of a project, from preliminary feasibility studies and development of project briefs, through design, costing and construction stages, and finalisation of the completed works.

Project Needs Analysis

Project needs analysis deals with the analysis of requirements of all stakeholders in the project, and the development of the project brief. On larger projects this can be a complex process, involving consultants as well as the internal project management team. Future development needs are considered, and a feasibility study stage may be required to test a range of options before the design and construction process begins in earnest. On smaller projects the needs analysis phase is dealt with by the Facilities Management project representative, in conjunction with the client, to develop the project scope and brief.

Planning and Design

Project planning and design is managed by the Facilities Management project representative, and may be undertaken by in-house architects and designers, or by external consultants, depending on the size, complexity and particular characteristics of the project. The design for the new or refurbished facility will be developed based on the brief which has emerged at the needs analysis stage.

Project Construction

The Facilities Management representative will manage the construction process, which follows from the planning and design stage of the works. The project may be tendered or competitively quoted, depending on the scope and value of the works involved. Builders or contractors are vetted for their suitability, before they are contracted to work on campus. Any contractor working on a Deakin campus must participate in a Facilities Management induction process for Occupational Health and Safety reasons, before they may work at Deakin.

Project Handover

The finalisation stages can include a range of handover requirements, depending on the complexity and scale of the project. The Facilities Management project representative will manage the process to ensure that all facilities are safe for inhabitants to move in, and commissioning, warranties, ongoing maintenance and so on are attended to as required. The relocation of staff and students to new or refurbished environments will be managed as part of the project if required.
