Commonwealth supported places and HECS-HELP

Please read the 2012 Information for Commonwealth supported students publication for information on HECS-HELP loans and how you pay for your student contributions.

To obtain HECS-HELP and finalise your Commonwealth supported place, you must complete the Commonwealth Assistance Form (CAF) on StudentConnect when you enrol. Failure to complete this form by the census date will result in your enrolment being terminated. Please note that you must provide your tax file number in order to obtain HECS-HELP.

Only Australian citizens and holders of a permanent humanitarian visa are eligible for HECS-HELP. All New Zealand citizens and holders of a permanent visa other than a humanitarian visa are required to pay the full student contribution amount up-front, and are not entitled to receive any discount.

For more information on HECS-HELP, visit www.deakin.edu.au/fees/ or goingtouni.gov.au.

Fees and invoices

All invoicing at Deakin University is done online via StudentConnect – no paper invoices are issued. An online invoice will be provided to you each trimester listing your assessed fees or student contributions and any other administrative fees. If you have completed a HECS-HELP loan request form and provided your tax file number, you can choose to pay all, part, or none of your tuition fees or student contributions. Your invoice on StudentConnect will indicate if your tax file number is on record with the University.

To view or pay your online invoice, go to StudentConnect and click on the 'Generate your invoice' link on the sidebar menu.

For more information on invoices, visit www.deakin.edu.au/current-students/study-information/fees/online-invoices.php

Making a partial up-front payment

If you have accepted a Commonwealth supported place, you can choose to make a full or partial up-front payment if you want to. You will then be issued an electronic invoice showing the full up-front amount and allowing you to specify what portion of that amount you want to pay. Payments of $500 or more attract a 10 per cent discount.

If you have supplied your tax file number and you choose not to pay the full contribution, the remainder of your HECS-HELP debt will be deferred at the census date if you are eligible.

What if I am an Australian permanent resident?

If you’re the holder of a permanent visa (other than a permanent humanitarian visa) or a New Zealand citizen, you are not eligible for HECS-HELP. Please note, however, that you must still complete the electronic Commonwealth Assistance form (eCAF) via StudentConnect to accept a Commonwealth supported place. Read the HECS-HELP publication carefully.

How much will I have to pay when enrolling?

Nothing. However, you can choose to make a full or partial up-front student contribution payment – if you do this, the University will issue an electronic invoice for your Trimester 1 fees in early February.

If you have elected to defer all your student contributions to HECS-HELP, you can still view your invoice online in StudentConnect, but do not have to pay anything.

Student services and amenities fee

At the time we were preparing this booklet, the Commonwealth Government was considering introducing a new law that would allow universities to charge students a fee to support the provision of student services and amenities. Unfortunately, the Government had not finalised the new laws before we had to print this booklet – IF the University requires you to pay a services and amenities fee (in addition to your tuition fees), we will send you specific information.
