Step one: as a gap year student you will be provided with your own username and password. You must first choose to defer your Deakin University offer. You will do this by filling out the online deferral of offer form.
Step two: indicate if you would like to participate in the Gap Year program on your online deferral form.
Step three: to maximize the services available, you are also encouraged to visit the Gap Year Information Stand and attend your Course Advice and Enrolment Session on campus during enrolment week.
Step four: if you choose to study during your gap year you can select elective units Introduction to University Study (ALW117) and/or Writing for Professional Practice (ACS160) and earn credit towards your degree.* You can enrol in a unit online or at enrolment day. You can also choose to study on-campus or off-campus.
Step five: a staff member from Deakin University will confirm your enrolment. Make the most of Deakin’s resources and facilities, by attending workshops, events and getting involved in the University lifestyle.
* Disclaimer: You may be eligible to defer the payment of elective subjects ALW117 and ACS160 while part of the Gap Year program under the HECS-HELP scheme. Enrolment in the eabove two subjects are subject to course requirements. As a Gap Year student you will have access to Deakin facilities, support services and will be treated as an enrolled Deakin student.

This unit is ideal for anyone who has chosen to work during their gap year as it will assist you to develop the skills that are required in the workforce. It will enable students to strengthen their skills in persuasive writing, research and presenting. Students will explore the power of language and the characteristics of effective and ineffective writing; the relationships between written and spoken language; strategies for developing arguments; and the requirements of a range of types of writing including reports, letters, academic essays, summaries, media releases and persuasive writing.
The unit will provide you with workplace-oriented skills that will enhance your performance in professional writing fields. You will participate in a hypothetical scenario and will be required to employ different forms of writing and oral communication to tackle issues that arise from this scenario.
This unit will be offered at all campuses as well as off-campus in Trimester 1 and Trimester 2 2012.
