Credit for previous study or work (credit for prior learning)

Deakin acknowledges that many commencing students come from backgrounds other than secondary school, such as TAFE, other universities and the workforce and offers extensive credit transfer arrangements for most courses. This can reduce the number of units you need to take to be awarded the Deakin qualification.

You may like to search our Credit for Prior Learning Database if you think you might be eligible to receive credit for previously completed qualifications. Please note that applications are also welcome from students who have completed previous studies from institutions that are not listed in the database. You can also search for the course via the course search and view the 'Entry requirements' specific section. In addition you can apply for credit for prior learning if you have significant work experience in your chosen area of study.

All applications for credit for prior learning are reviewed by a committee of the Faculty in which enrolment is sought. Faculties will generally consider qualifications which were completed within the last 10 years. Applicants whose qualifications are older than 10 years may still submit an application for evaluation if they have maintained involvement in the area and can provide evidence of this.  Faculties may impose a shorter time limit for some courses to ensure currency of knowledge and skills.

We suggest that you check with the relevant professional body (e.g. CPA Australia) that accepting advanced standing towards your degree does not prevent you from being accepted into its membership.

Applying for credit for prior learning

When you apply for a course at Deakin, you can indicate that you wish to be considered for credit for prior learning. You can complete the credit for prior learning application form (79 KB) and forward directly to your Faculty Course Advisor.

Applicants should forward a full academic record which has been certified / notarised (authenticated by an appropriate signatory) by the institution which awarded the qualification or certified photocopies of original transcripts. A complete assessment can be made only when full documentation has been provided. Applicants should not send original documents as they unfortunately are not able to be returned.
