Pursue your personal or professional interests with a Deakin single subject non-award unit.
Single subject non-award study provides the general public with access to a wide variety of tertiary level units. Some units have prerequisites or special requirements, but most are open to all. Take a look at our course search and find a non-award unit that is right for you. Most units offered by Deakin are available for non-award study.
A non-award unit is a unit of study from a degree course or courses that does not lead to a degree. If successfully completed, the unit may be counted as credit towards a degree course at Deakin, subject to admission to a degree course and approval by the faculty.
The successful completion of a single unit does not automatically qualify a student for admission to an award course at the University. Anyone wishing to enrol in an award course after completing a non-award unit will be required to complete the normal application procedures and their application will be considered with all other applicants.
If admitted to a unit/s, students must complete all administrative, academic and examination requirements in order to obtain formal acknowledgement that they have completed all requirements of the unit.
Applicants are encouraged to return their completed forms as early as possible as places may be limited. Closing dates are listed on the Semester Closing Dates page
Take a look at our course search to select the non-award unit/s you would like to study. Most units offered at Deakin are available as non-award units.
For single subject non-award study please apply online via the Applicant Portal.
You can apply for multiple units in one semester on the same application, if the unit is from the same faculty. However, if you apply for a unit in one semester, then wish to pursue study in another semester, you are required to submit another online application.
To choose a unit to suit you, read the student handbooks for comprehensive unit descriptions, semester and mode availability (on or off campus), prerequisites, credit point value and assessment details.
Approval for enrolment is dependent on the availability of places after Commonwealth supported students have been enrolled in the unit/s. Once enrolled, you have the privileges and responsibilities of a student at Deakin, and an invoice for any fees payable will be forwarded to you.
The University is required to charge fees for single subject non-award unit enrolments. Single subject non-award unit fees are semester based and cover full tuition costs. The cost of each unit depends on the government classified area of study the unit belongs to.
Single subject non-award unit students are not eligible for financial assistance from Centrelink, university loans or other grants. If fees are to be paid by an employer or the Department of Education, Science and Training, a letter from the employer stating this arrangement must accompany the application form.
A single subject non-award unit is not Commonwealth supported and therefore students are not eligible for HECS-HELP or FEE-HELP (unless you are undertaking bridging training for overseas trained professionals). Want more information on fees?
