Course overview
The Graduate Certificate of Children's Literature aims to provide you with specialist knowledge and skills in the field of children's literature. You will become familiar with a broad range of texts, taking account of variations of genre, the historical and cultural contexts in which children's texts are produced, and the ideological frameworks in which they are located. The course will introduce you to contemporary theoretical approaches to the study of children's texts, so beyond the span of the course itself you will be equipped to read texts in a more informed and theoretically grounded manner.Fees and charges
Equivalent Full Time Student Load (EFTSL)
EFTSL is the standard annual full time load. Eight credit points is the standard full time load for one year of study. If you are studying a graduate certificate of 4 credit points, your total course EFTSL is 0.5.

A Fee paying place is one for which the university does not receive any government funding. As such, students enrolled in these places are required to contribute the full cost of their course.
Fee paying places are available to domestic students. Domestic students are those who are Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens or holders of a permanent visa.

These courses are designed to provide training and qualifications in children's literature for graduates who wish to extend and develop their knowledge of the field of children's literature; teachers and librarians who are currently working in the area of children's literature in primary or secondary school settings, or who wish to specialise in children's literature; professionals working in fields associated with children's literature, such as publishing, retail and promotional activities; and primary and secondary teachers who wish to upgrade their qualifications.Course rules
To qualify for the award of Graduate Certificate of Children's Literature, a student must successfully complete 4 credit points of study comprising:- 2 credit points of compulsory core units; and
- 2 credit points of electives selected from the specified list of units below

Entry requirements - general
Deakin University offers admission to postgraduate courses through a number of Admission categories.In all categories of admission, selection is based primarily on academic merit as indicated by an applicant's previous academic record.

Entry requirements - specific
To be eligible for entry into the Graduate Certificate of Children's Literature applicants require:
- a bachelor degree from an approved tertiary institution; or
- qualifications deemed to be equivalent; or
- extensive relevant work experience undertaken at a senior level as deemed appropriate by the Course Selection Team.
Credit for prior learning - general
The University aims to provide students with as much credit as possible for approved prior study or informal learning which exceeds the normal entrance requirements for the course and is within the constraints of the course regulations. Students are required to complete a minimum of one-third of the course at Deakin University, or four credit points, whichever is the greater. In the case of certificates, including graduate certificates, a minimum of two credit points within the course must be completed at Deakin.

Credit for prior learning - specific
Applications for credit transfer will be considered depending on the student's prior qualifications and professional experience.
The Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma of Children’s Literature and the Masters in Writing and Literature comprise a suite of fully articulated courses. Successful completion of the Graduate Certificate of Children’s Literature will lead to entry into either the Graduate Diploma of Children’s Literature or the Master Arts (Writing and Literature) with up to 4 credit points for credit transfer. Successful completion of the Graduate Diploma of Children’s Literature or equivalent will lead to entry into the Master of Arts (Writing and Literature) with up to 8 credit points for credit transfer.
