The Bachelor of Early Childhood Education (Honours) offers an opportunity for selected students, who have demonstrated academic merit and an ability to work independently, to undertake a year of honours study beyond the Bachelor of Early Childhood Education (or equivalent).
The honours year is a research-focused course, which extends the completed research work of the Bachelor of Early Childhood Education (or equivalent), and enables students to undertake research training that will equip them to plan, implement and evaluate a rigorous research study at honours level. Students will be able to undertake a substantial and original research project, whilst being under the supervision of an academic with a proven research record. Students will also develop skills and knowledge to identify contemporary issues in early childhood education and care. The honours research units are sequential and specifically designed to enable students to extend their research ability and understanding in the early childhood context, through the advanced research methodology units, literature review critiques, and in the development and presentation of a minor thesis.

Equivalent Full Time Student Load (EFTSL)
EFTSL is the standard annual full time load. Eight credit points is the standard full time load for one year of study.
Commonwealth supported place (CSP)
A Commonwealth supported place is one for which the university receives some government funding. As such, students enrolled in these places are required to contribute only part of the cost of their course. To be eligible for a Commonwealth supported place you must be an Australian citizen, or a New Zealand citizen or holder of a permanent visa who will be residing in Australia for the duration of your unit/s of study. All Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens and holders of a permanent visa are allocated a Student Learning Entitlement (SLE). SLE is made up of ordinary, any additional and lifelong SLE. Ordinary SLE entitles eligible students up to the equivalent of 7 years of full time study in a Commonwealth supported place.

There is an increasing demand for qualified and approved early childhood educators, teachers and researchers. Graduates of this course will have advanced knowledge and skills for professional research work and/or further learning in early childhood education. The skills and knowledge acquired will enhance students’ future career prospects in a broad range of occupations in both private and public early childhood sectors. Opportunities also exist for employment in government agencies, pre-school and school settings, community services or not-for-profit organisations. Following successful completion of this course, high-achieving students may be eligible to undertake PhD study.

Entry requirements - general
Deakin University offers admission to undergraduate courses through a number of Admission categories. In all categories of admission, selection is based primarily on academic merit as indicated by an applicant's previous academic record.

Entry requirements - specific
In order to be considered for admission to the BECE (Honours) degree, applicants must have completed the requirements of the BECE course (E330) or equivalent. To be eligible for admission applicants for BECE (Honours) will normally have a Distinction average or equivalent over the entire undergraduate degree course. An individual interview will also be held with any honours applicants to clarify their research interest area and to verify that supervision is feasible and the study area is relevant to early childhood education. This interview will provide an opportunity to review applicants’ previous research competence achieved at the undergraduate level.
Credit for prior learning - general
The University aims to provide students with as much credit as possible for approved prior study or informal learning which exceeds the normal entrance requirements for the course and is within the constraints of the course regulations. Students are required to complete a minimum of one-third of the course at Deakin University.
