Course overview
The Graduate Certificate of Higher Education is designed to meet the requirements for credentialing tertiary teaching for academic staff. Such qualifications are becoming increasingly valued across the higher education sector, both in Australia and internationally.
The course is suitable for all academics teaching undergraduate or postgraduate students, in research supervision, and in the leadership or management of higher education. It caters for graduate students, tertiary teachers, adult educators, and professional staff engaged in supporting teaching and learning programs or delivering professional development programs.
The course is designed to develop your understanding of issues, research findings, and knowledge related to a range of tertiary teaching and learning contexts. Relevant policies, procedures and practices will be used to further your knowledge of quality teaching and learning as well as approaches and strategies to curriculum design, assessment, and the scholarship and leadership of teaching.
Fees and charges
Fee paying place - International (IFP)A Fee paying place is one for which the University does not receive any government funding. As such, students enrolled in these places are required to contribute the full cost of their course.
Fees for international students apply to persons living in Australia with Temporary Resident status, provided that there is no limitation on study and persons living abroad who are not Australian citizens and do not have Permanent Resident status in Australia.
Equivalent Full Time Student Load (EFTSL)
EFTSL is the standard annual full time load. Eight credit points is the standard full time load for one year of study. If you are studying a graduate certificate of 4 credit points, your total course EFTSL is 0.5.

Course rules
In keeping with University regulations, in order to be eligible for the award, students must successfully complete half of the units at Deakin University. If students are awarded 3 units of credit transfer and recognition, they may choose one of two options:
- to complete one unit and be awarded a certificate of completion for the unit; or
- to refuse one unit of credit transfer and recognition, successfully complete two units, and so be eligible for the Graduate Certificate of Higher Education award.

Articulation to Masters course
The Graduate Certificate may articulate with either a Master of Education or Master of Professional Education and Training depending on applicant's qualifications.Teaching methods
This course will be offered in an off campus mode with online and distance education elements. Some face-to-face workshops will be available. Instruction will be provided through CloudDeakin, multimedia resources and recommended texts and readings.Entry requirements - general
Deakin University offers admission to postgraduate courses through a number of Admission categories.In all categories of admission, selection is based primarily on academic merit as indicated by an applicant's previous academic record. The minimum requirements are successful completion of a three-year undergraduate degree, or equivalent, from an approved university or other educational institution or successful completion of other equivalent qualifications gained by examination, or approved professional or industrial experience. International students must also meet the English language requirements.
Entry requirements - specific
Entrants to the course must have successfully completed an approved qualification at degree level in any field.
Participants in this course are expected to undertake investigations into their own teaching practices and contexts, so it is highly desirable that they are concurrently engaged in tertiary teaching or in supporting teaching and learning processes.
IELTS / English language requirements
Please note that English language requirements exist for entry to this course and you will be required to meet the English language level requirement that is applicable in the year of your commencement of studies.
It is the students’ responsibility to ensure that she/he has the required IELTS score to register with any external accredited courses. (more details)
Credit for prior learning - general
If you have completed previous studies which you believe may reduce the number of units you have to complete at Deakin, indicate in the appropriate section on your application that you wish to be considered for credit transfer. You will need to provide a certified copy of your previous course details so your credit can be determined. If you are eligible, your offer letter will then contain information about your credit transfer.
Your credit transfer is formally approved prior to your enrolment at Deakin during the Enrolment and Orientation Program. You must bring original documents relating to your previous study so that this approval can occur.

Credit for prior learning - specific
Credit transfer is considered on an individual basis in accordance with University and Faculty policy. Credit transfer for specific units may be granted where previous studies, experience or learning involve a substantial overlap of content at a similar standard as assessed by the Faculty Board. Unspecified credit transfer may be granted for previous studies, work, relevant work experience, life experience or learning where no comparable Deakin unit exists.
