Increasingly, people in a wide range of professions are being asked to incorporate health promotion activities within their workplace. Deakin’s suite of postgraduate courses in health promotion is designed to provide students from varying backgrounds with the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for developing appropriate approaches to health promotion practice.
The Graduate Certificate of Health Promotion is ideally suited to those wishing to gain employment in the health sector, as well as those working in the health sector who wish to upgrade their knowledge and qualifications to pursue management roles.
Throughout the course you will acquire knowledge of current and emerging health issues in local and global contexts and be equipped with the core competencies that will enable you to practise confidently in this field. You will develop a foundation of knowledge of health promotion principles and values, skills pertinent to health education and communication endeavours and the practical skills required to undertake needs assessments, program planning and evaluation.
The Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and Master of Health Promotion are a suite of postgraduate programs. As such, students completing the Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma can elect to move (articulate) into a higher award.
Graduate Certificate (H515) students can articulate into the Graduate Diploma (H615) or Master of Health Promotion (H749) whilst Graduate Diploma (H615) students can articulate into the Master of Health Promotion (H749).
Students who wish to articulate to a higher award should discuss their request with a student adviser during the final trimester of study for their current course.
Graduates in this course should be eligible to apply for membership of the Australian Health Promotion Association and the International Union of Health Promotion and Education.

Fees and charges
Equivalent Full Time Student Load (EFTSL)
EFTSL is the standard annual full time load. Eight credit points is the standard full time load for one year of study. If you are studying a graduate certificate of 4 credit points, your total course EFTSL is 0.5.
This is a fee-paying course. Domestic students may be eligible for FEE-HELP assistance in paying these tuition fees. For more information about FEE-HELP go to deakin.edu.au/fees.
Fee paying place - Domestic (DFP)
A fee paying place is one for which the university does not receive any government funding. As such, students enrolled in these places are required to contribute the full cost of their course.
Fee paying places are available to domestic students. Domestic students are those who are Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens or holders of a permanent visa.

Following successful completion of the Graduate Certificate of Health Promotion, you will be qualified to take advantage of the career opportunities that exist world wide in national and international health organisations; medium-sized businesses; multinational corporations; community organisations; human services agencies; local, state and federal government departments; statutory authorities; and Non-Government Organisations (NGOs).

Entry requirements - general
Deakin University offers admission to postgraduate courses through a number of Admission categories.
In all categories of admission, selection is based primarily on academic merit as indicated by an applicant's previous academic record.

Entry requirements - specific
Applicants for the Graduate Certificate of Health Promotion course should have an approved tertiary qualification and be involved in a health related field for a minimum of two years (eg. health promotion, nursing, allied health, education, business) or engaged in relevant work experience activities for a minimum of two years. Applicants must also submit a written statement outlining reasons for undertaking the course. Applicants without a tertiary qualification who can demonstrate that they have gained sufficient knowledge and skills through work-related training may also be considered. A phone interview may be undertaken for consideration into the course.
Credit for prior learning - general
The University aims to provide students with as much credit as possible for approved prior postgraduate study or informal learning which exceeds the normal entrance requirements for the course and is within the constraints of the course regulations. In this course students are required to complete a minimum of one-third of the course at Deakin University, or a minimum of one credit point. Please note that postgraduate unit credits will not be given based on completion of undergraduate units or if the postgraduate studies were completed over 10 years from when you apply into this course.

- Statement of purpose which demonstrates your motivation and commitment to study, knowledge of the course, desire to pursue a career in a related field, any relevant work experience not already covered in your employment history including voluntary work, and other relevant life experience.
- A copy of your current resume
- Certified copies of undergraduate/post tertiary qualification studies
