Course overview
Deakin’s Graduate Diploma of Coaching and Counselling extends the knowledge acquired throughout the graduate certificate program to provide advanced level learning and skill acquisition. Throughout the course you will develop flexible high-level independent judgement, as well as professional planning and implementation skills appropriate for working professionally in a coaching and counselling role.
You will also acquire a personalised range of business and marketing tools relevant to a start-up business venture which is particularly relevant for those wishing to establish a business as a professional coach or pursue further qualifications as a counsellor.
The graduate diploma also offers a practical placement unit in the final year of the program which provides an opportunity to develop practical skills in a supported environment and confidently apply your knowledge and skills in a professional setting.
Professional recognition
A number of professional associations are linked to these fields including the International Coaching Association (ICA), the International Coaching Federation (ICF) and the Australian Counselling Association. The course curriculum is aligned to and likely to fulfil the accreditation requirements of a number of accrediting bodies such as the ICA, and accreditation for the graduate certificate and graduate diploma will be sought when the first cohort of students graduate at the end of 2013 and 2014 respectively.
Subject to accreditation, graduates will be eligible to apply for registration and membership of the relevant associations.

This course provides sufficient generic skills and professional practice applicable to any career where working with individuals and groups for behaviour change is a focus.
For students who have a recognised undergraduate major sequence in psychology, this course offers an alternative career pathway from the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) approved honours and graduate diploma courses.
Deakin University is now offering the only programs in Australia that provide both counselling and coaching skills within the one qualification. The course also includes extensive training in motivating and supporting behaviour change and growth, as well as advanced communication, interpersonal and conflict resolution skills, for both individual and group applications.
So whether you’re a health or mental health professional wanting to extend your capacity to assist your clients improve their lives, a workplace supervisor/manager who wants to be better at inspiring and assisting staff or clients to excel, or a recent graduate of psychology1 or other relevant field wanting to improve your skills and qualifications to be more competitive and competent in the job market, this course will help you make it happen.
Graduates will be well-equipped for a range of positions that require coaching and/or counselling expertise, including (but not limited to):

Deakin University offers admission to postgraduate courses through a number of Admission categories.In all categories of admission, selection is based primarily on academic merit as indicated by an applicant's previous academic record.

Entry requirements - specific
The minimum requirements for admission are:
- successful completion of a three-year undergraduate degree, or equivalent, from an approved university or other educational institution or successful completion of other equivalent qualifications gained by examination. For applicants without a 3-year undergraduate degree, alternative entry is available. This entails being able to demonstrate having had 3-years full time (or equivalent) of relevant work experience.
Credit for prior learning - general
The University aims to provide students with as much credit as possible for approved prior study or informal learning which exceeds the normal entrance requirements for the course and is within the constraints of the course regulations. Students are required to complete a minimum of one-third of the course at Deakin University, or four credit points, whichever is the greater. In the case of certificates, including graduate certificates, a minimum of two credit points within the course must be completed at Deakin.You can also refer to the Credit for Prior Learning System which outlines the credit that may be granted towards a Deakin University degree.
