Deakin was the first university to offer a course in dietetics in Australia and has been proudly offering Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA) accredited courses for more than 35 years.
Deakin’s Master of Dietetics is a postgraduate-level, three-trimester professional training program that builds on your undergraduate knowledge in nutrition, physiology and biochemistry, to develop skills and competencies in dietary management in both health and disease.
The Master of Dietetics is accredited by the Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA). Students graduating from accredited courses are eligible for full membership of the DAA and the Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) program and to work in all areas of dietetics.
Fees and charges
Equivalent Full Time Student Load (EFTSL)
EFTSL is the standard annual full time load. Eight credit points is considered a standard full time load for one year. Each unit you study has an EFTSL value. You can add these together to calculate your study load each year. Depending on enrolment, you may be enrolled in more than or less than the one EFTSL each year.
Commonwealth supported place (CSP)
Under the present legislation, a Commonwealth supported place is one for which the University receives some Government funding. Students enrolled in these places are required to contribute part of their course costs. To be eligible for a Commonwealth supported place you must be an Australian citizen, or New Zealand citizen or holder of a permanent visa who will be residing in Australia for the duration of your study.
The current Federal Government has proposed a number of major reforms for the higher education sector (see the Higher Education and Research Reform Amendment Bill 2014), including fee deregulation in respect of domestic student fees. This legislation may be reintroduced to the parliament in the latter half of 2015 and if passed, will impact on the CSP and FFP course fees applicable in 2016.

It has been calculated on the basis of a typical enrolment of a student undertaking the course in 2015, and reflects the cost involved in undertaking full-time study within the specified discipline. The 2016 CSP and FFP course fees may change if the Commonwealth Government's proposed fee deregulation and reforms legislation is passed.
The actual fees charged by Deakin University, will depend on the individual unit discipline and may vary from the indicative course fee cited, particularly if units are chosen from a number of disciplines. The cost of each unit offered in 2016 can be viewed from the Unit Search. Should a change in Government policy affect the cost of units offered, the website will be updated as soon as possible.
Full fee paying (FFP)
A full fee paying place is one which the University does not receive any Government funding. Students enrolled in these places contribute the full cost of their course.
Domestic full-fee paying places are available to Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens or holders of a permanent visa.
The actual course fees charged by Deakin University, is based on the course and the study load (EFTSL) being undertaken. The study load (EFSTL) value of each unit offered in 2016 can be viewed from the Unit Search.

The fees per course/unit/credit point may be otherwise subject to an annual increase due to rises in the cost of course delivery and service.

Dietetics is a career rich in opportunity. As an Accredited Practising Dietitian you will be eligible to work in all areas of dietetics, including: clinical (hospital) dietetics, community nutrition, private practice, food industry, public health, sports nutrition, dietetic education and research, food service, public relations, marketing, communications, media, health promotion and policy development.
Deakin’s Masters program allows you to start your career sooner; being one of few Masters programs in dietetics in Australia of 18 months duration.
The course consists of 12 credit points. One of the units, HBS745, is studied in Cloud (online).
Failure of a compulsory practicum component in any unit of study will normally lead to exclusion. All expenses associated with practicum units, including any transportation or accommodation costs are the responsibility of the student.

Where a preclusion is granted, students must select another HSN7xx unit from the list below. For example if you were given a preclusion for HSN740 Nutrition Research Skills, it means that you are not required to enrol into HSN740, and instead you have to choose another HSN7xx unit from the following options:

Throughout the course you will have the opportunity to develop specialist skills related to the professional practice of nutrition and dietetics, and achieve competency in dietetic practice through extensive professional practice placements.
Professional practice placements provide you with applied experience in clinical, community and food service settings to develop discipline specific knowledge. You will also develop research, critical thinking and communication skills throughout the course.

Department of Human Services policy
In accordance with Department of Human Services policy*, all students are required to undertake a National Police Record Check prior to professional placements in each calendar year of their course. Students who fail to obtain a Police Record Check prior to the commencement of any professional placement will not be able to undertake that placement.
Students may also be required to declare their immunisation status to satisfy the requirements of health organisations where they will be undertaking their professional placement.

Entry requirements - general
Deakin University offers admission to postgraduate courses through a number of admission categories.
In all categories of admission, selection is based primarily on academic merit as indicated by an applicant's previous academic record.

Entry requirements - specific
Applicants must hold a three year Bachelor's degree or equivalent in a relevant cognate area (for example: science, health sciences, nutrition, food science, exercise science, biomedical science, allied health or nursing). 50% of each of the first and second years of the applicants’ undergraduate degree must be composed of bioscience, chemistry, physiology and biochemistry, including a minimum 15% of a full-year load each of biochemistry and physiology. This is usually at least two biochemistry subjects at second year level where first year chemistry is a pre-requisite of these subjects and two physiology subjects also at second year level.
Applicants are also required to have completed at least 4 units (equivalent to 4 Deakin credit points) of nutrition and food science study covering content relating to principles of nutrition, lifespan nutrition diet and disease and food science.
Potential applicants should seek further information in regards to the exact content of the pre-requisite nutrition units needed.

Credit for prior learning - general
The University aims to provide students with as much credit as possible for approved prior study or informal learning which exceeds the normal entrance requirements for the course and is within the constraints of the course regulations. Students are required to complete a minimum of one-third of the course at Deakin University, or four credit points, whichever is the greater. In the case of certificates, including graduate certificates, a minimum of two credit points within the course must be completed at Deakin.
