Course overview

This course provides an understanding of the functions and principles of management within the field of arts and entertainment. It examines the role of arts management in creating opportunities for arts and cultural organisations to be vital, viable and responsive to stakeholders. The critical role of arts marketing in ensuring the engagement of diverse audiences and stakeholders is also examined.   Students will develop the necessary skills and knowledge, work in the arts and cultural sector, understand the sectors’ fundraising and sponsorship needs, contribute to the growing internationalisation of the arts, facilitate the vibrant and sustainable operation of arts organisations, and enable innovative programs that provide participatory opportunities for arts audiences.

Study within this program combines both the theory and practice of arts management, through a combination of reading, research and practical assignments.  Students have the opportunity to engage with a range of industry representatives, gain exposure to the work of cutting edge practitioners and thinkers, and integrate their work and learning.

Within this program students are able to specialise in areas of arts management such as project management, community based arts, and fundraising.

Students who successfully complete the Graduate Certificate of Arts and Entertainment Management will be eligible for entry into the Master of Arts and Entertainment Management.

Off campus studies

Deakin offers many courses which can be studied by distance education overseas.

However, international students living in Australia must, in each compulsory trimester (that is, Trimesters 1 and 2), enrol in at least one unit that is offered as an on-campus unit and can, in addition enrol in online or off-campus units. Best practice is to enrol in mostly on-campus units in each compulsory trimester.

In a non-compulsory trimester (Trimester 3), international students may study online and off-campus units only. Note that online and off-campus units can make up no more than 25% of a total study load.

Fees and charges

Fee paying place - International (IFP)
A Fee paying place is one for which the University does not receive any government funding. As such, students enrolled in these places are required to contribute the full cost of their course.

Fees for international students apply to persons living in Australia with Temporary Resident status, provided that there is no limitation on study and persons living abroad who are not Australian citizens and do not have Permanent Resident status in Australia.

Equivalent Full Time Student Load (EFTSL)
EFTSL is the standard annual full time load. Eight credit points is the standard full time load for one year of study. If you are studying a graduate certificate of 4 credit points, your total course EFTSL is 0.5.

This program prepares graduates for leadership roles across the range of cultural organisations, including: festivals, mega-events, community events, facilities, publishing houses, music venues, performing arts, visual arts, film and video, radio and television, cultural heritage and museums, and communications technology organisations.

Opportunities also exist within the private leisure, arts management and marketing companies.

Entry requirements - general

Deakin University offers admission to postgraduate courses through a number of Admission categories.
In all categories of admission, selection is based primarily on academic merit as indicated by an applicant's previous academic record. The minimum requirements are successful completion of a three-year undergraduate degree, or equivalent, from an approved university or other educational institution or successful completion of other equivalent qualifications gained by examination, or approved professional or industrial experience. International students must also meet the English language requirements.

Entry requirements - specific

Completion of a tertiary program equivalent to not less than 3 years of full-time study at a university or other approved educational institution, or for those without a degree, 5 years of relevant work experience.

 

IELTS / English language requirements

 

Please note that English language requirements exist for entry to this course and you will be required to meet the English language level requirement that is applicable in the year of your commencement of studies.


It is the students’ responsibility to ensure that she/he has the required IELTS score to register with any external accredited courses.

Credit for prior learning - general

If you have completed previous studies which you believe may reduce the number of units you have to complete at Deakin, indicate in the appropriate section on your application that you wish to be considered for credit for prior learning. You will need to provide a certified copy of your previous course details so your credit can be determined. If you are eligible, your offer letter will then contain information about your credit for prior learning.
Your credit for prior learning is formally approved prior to your enrolment at Deakin during the Enrolment and Orientation Program. You must bring original documents relating to your previous study so that this approval can occur.
