Course overview

The Graduate Certificate of Retail Management has been developed for those currently working in the retail sector wishing to develop specialist skills and knowledge to enhance their professional experience.  It will enhance understanding of key contemporary principles and practices, and the developing role of performance knowledge skills.  At the conclusion of the course, you will be able to demonstrate knowledge of key issues in retail management, including retail systems, ownership, distribution and supply, customer relations, consumer behaviour, merchandise operations, marketing, branding, and financial considerations.

The aim of the Graduate Certificate of Retail Management is to broaden knowledge and understanding of retail management by considering it in a number of contexts, including the Australian retail sector and international retail markets, while exploring global issues such as economic and environmental sustainability, along with social and cultural matters.

Fees and charges

Equivalent Full Time Student Load (EFTSL)
EFTSL is the standard annual full time load. Eight credit points is the standard full time load for one year of study. If you are studying a graduate certificate of 4 credit points, your total course EFTSL is 0.5.

This is a fee-paying course. Domestic students may be eligible for FEE-HELP assistance in paying these tuition fees. For more information about FEE-HELP go to http://www.deakin.edu.au/future-students/fees/.

Fee paying place - Domestic (DFP)
A Fee paying place is one for which the university does not receive any government funding. As such, students enrolled in these places are required to contribute the full cost of their course.
Fee paying places are available to domestic students. Domestic students are those who are Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens or holders of a permanent visa.

* The 'indicative annual course fee' cited has been provided as a guide only. It has been calculated on the basis of a typical enrolment of a student undertaking the course in 2013, and reflects the cost involved in undertaking a full-time quota of units within the specified discipline.
The actual fees charged by Deakin University will depend upon the discipline from which each individual unit is chosen, and may vary from the indicative course fee cited, particularly if units are chosen from a number of disciplines. The cost of each unit offered in 2013 can be viewed from the Unit Search.
Please note that the fees per unit/credit point may increase annually due to rises in the cost of course delivery and service.
Deakin assumes no responsibility for persons relying on 'indicative course fees' to calculate the total future cost of their course.

Career opportunities

The Graduate Certificate of Retail Management develops within students a comprehensive understanding of the principles and practices essential for a successful career in the dynamic and rapidly-evolving retail industry.  The sector has recently experienced a critical skills shortage in key disciplines like merchandise management, category management, buying planning and shopper marketing and the Graduate Certificate of Retail Management provides a solid and competitive foundation from which to succeed in these challenging and rewarding professions.

Diverse retail career opportunities also exist in areas like store development, store management, HR, marketing, property, supply chain, CRM and business consulting both nationally and internationally. For qualified and competent students of retailing in these fields, career advancement can be rapid and the remuneration excellent.

The retail industry is increasingly recognising the need for qualified managers and executives and possessing a formal academic qualification in retail will help students capitalise upon their full potential as a true retail professional in a wide variety of roles and organisations.
