Deakin’s Graduate Diploma of Property will prepare you for a range of roles including property development, property management and valuation.
The Graduate Diploma of Property has been designed for professionals such as architects, surveyors and construction managers looking to broaden their careers in the built environment. The course is also ideal for graduates with degrees in commerce, management or law disciplines wishing to move into the property field.
The course aims to develop and refine your core professional skills, particularly related to the fields of property development and valuation. You’ll establish an understanding of the various stakeholders in the property and real estate market, and how they collaborate to develop and manage property.
The course brings together a range of built environment disciplines, from sustainable construction to property management. There is a focus on sustainability and its economic, social and environmental relevance in the context of property development.
Other study areas include statutory valuation, property investment, property law and practice, property development, and advanced property valuation.
The Graduate Diploma of Property is recognised and professionally accredited by the Australian Property Institute (API). This accreditation ensures that the course is of the highest quality as required by the API.
The Graduate Diploma of Property is academically accredited for Certified Practising Valuer (CPV) and Certified Property Practitioner (CPP), providing there has been prior study in the knowledge field areas of:
- Finance and Accounting
- Commercial Law
- Property Economics or Economics
Professional association recognition means that your qualifications will be professionally recognised by employers and clients across Australia.
The Graduate Diploma of Property is recognised and professionally accredited by the Australian Property Institute (API). Graduates have satisfied the academic requirements for Certified Property Practitioner (CPP) status, Certified Property Manager (CPM) status and Certified Development Practitioner (CDP) status. In addition graduates who commenced study with a cognate undergraduate degree will satisfy the academic requirements for Certified Practising Valuer (CPV) status of the API.
Fees and charges
Equivalent Full Time Student Load (EFTSL)
EFTSL is the standard annual full time load. Eight credit points is considered a standard full time load for one year. Each unit you study has an EFTSL value. You can add these together to calculate your study load each year. Depending on enrolment, you may be enrolled in more than or less than the one EFTSL each year.
Commonwealth supported place (CSP)
Under the present legislation, a Commonwealth supported place is one for which the University receives some Government funding. Students enrolled in these places are required to contribute part of their course costs. To be eligible for a Commonwealth supported place you must be an Australian citizen, or New Zealand citizen or holder of a permanent visa who will be residing in Australia for the duration of your study.
The current Federal Government has proposed a number of major reforms for the higher education sector (see the Higher Education and Research Reform Amendment Bill 2014), including fee deregulation in respect of domestic student fees. This legislation may be reintroduced to the parliament in the latter half of 2015 and if passed, will impact on the CSP and FFP course fees applicable in 2016.

The 2016 CSP and FFP course fees may change if the Commonwealth Government's proposed fee deregulation and reforms legislation is passed.
The actual fees charged by Deakin University, will depend on the individual unit discipline and may vary from the indicative course fee cited, particularly if units are chosen from a number of disciplines. Full fee paying (FFP)
A full fee paying place is one which the University does not receive any Government funding. Students enrolled in these places contribute the full cost of their course.
Domestic full-fee paying places are available to Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens or holders of a permanent visa.
The actual course fees charged by Deakin University, is based on the course and the study load (EFTSL) being undertaken. The study load (EFSTL) value of each unit offered in 2016 can be viewed from the Unit Search.

The fees per course/unit/credit point may be otherwise subject to an annual increase due to rises in the cost of course delivery and service.

Career paths available for graduates with a qualification in property include, but are not limited to: Investment Trust Manager, Rural Property Broker/Consultant, Property Developer, Business Broker, Property Finance Consultant, Property Consultant, Property Researcher, Asset Manager, Sales and Leasing Negotiator, Portfolio Manager, Property Manager, Valuer (real property and plan/machinery).
To complete the Graduate Diploma of Property, students must attain a total of 8 credit points of core units. Most units (think of units as 'subjects') are equal to 1 credit point.

Entry requirements - specific
Minimum entry requirements:
- Bachelor degree in a different discipline. Completion of a major sequence in property or real estate will classify the degree as the same discipline.
- 5 years relevant work experience
Credit for prior learning - general
The University aims to provide students with as much credit as possible for approved prior study or informal learning which exceeds the normal entrance requirements for the course and is within the constraints of the course regulations. Students are required to complete a minimum of one-third of the course at Deakin University, or four credit points, whichever is the greater. In the case of certificates, including graduate certificates, a minimum of two credit points within the course must be completed at Deakin.
