Course overview
A member of the School of Law's academic staff will be appointed as principal supervisor for each candidate for the Master of Laws by research. Associate supervisors, either internal or external, may be appointed to assist the principal supervisor. Candidates will be required to meet certain attendance requirements. A candidate is required to complete a thesis embodying the results of research carried out in the field of study specified at the time of enrolment.Off campus studies
Deakin offers many courses which can be studied by distance education overseas.However, international students living in Australia must, in each compulsory trimester (that is, Trimesters 1 and 2), enrol in at least one unit that is offered as an on-campus unit and can, in addition enrol in online or off-campus units. Best practice is to enrol in mostly on-campus units in each compulsory trimester.
In a non-compulsory trimester (Trimester 3), international students may study online and off-campus units only. Note that online and off-campus units can make up no more than 25% of a total study load.
Fees and charges
Fee paying place - International (IFP)A Fee paying place is one for which the University does not receive any government funding. As such, students enrolled in these places are required to contribute the full cost of their course.
Fees for international students apply to persons living in Australia with Temporary Resident status, provided that there is no limitation on study and persons living abroad who are not Australian citizens and do not have Permanent Resident status in Australia.
Equivalent Full Time Student Load (EFTSL)
EFTSL is the standard annual full time load. Eight credit points is the standard full time load for one year of study.

The actual fees charged by Deakin University will depend upon the discipline from which each individual unit is chosen, and may vary from the indicative course fee cited, particularly if units are chosen from a number of disciplines. Please note that the fees per unit/credit point may increase annually due to rises in the cost of course delivery and service.

Entry requirements - general
The minimum qualification for admission as a candidate for a degree of master by research is a degree of bachelor with honours, from a recognised tertiary institution, in a field relevant to the program which the applicant proposes to undertake and for which the University can provide the required supervisory expertise.Entry requirements - specific
Entry to Higher Degree by Research candidature is normally granted on the basis of a bachelor's degree with honours (that is, a four year degree where the final year includes advanced studies in the discipline, research methodology training and a research thesis) or a master's degree with a substantial research component, in a field of study related to the subject of the proposed research. It is expected that a candidate for a doctoral program will have achieved the standard of at least second class honours (upper division), and that a candidate for a master's degree will have achieved the standard of second class honours. Other qualifications and experience may be considered for entry if the Higher Degrees by Research Committee accepts them as equivalent to those above. Where entry is sought based on alternative qualifications, a key requirement is that there has been some research activity leading to a thesis or equivalent publications. The HDR Committee looks for evidence of research potential and demonstrated ability to produce a significant report - two qualities which will be essential for successful candidature.
